Historic Kailua Village invites visitors and residents to stroll, shop and dine along oceanfront Alii Drive during Kokua Kailua on Sunday.
Alii Drive becomes a pedestrian-only walkway from 1 until 6 p.m. during the monthly event that offers a festive marketplace atmosphere complemented by the village’s many shops and restaurants.
Free entertainment begins at 4 p.m. on the lawn at Hulihee Palace.
AARP driver safety classes offered
Kona Palisades Community Association is sponsoring AARP Driver Safety Classes at 1 p.m. Monday and Aug. 28 at the Kona Palisades Recreation Center.
The classes include defensive driving tactics, dealing with road rage and how to adjust to age-related changes. These are classroom refresher courses with no driving or written tests. Most automobile insurance companies offer discounts upon completion of the course.
The cost is $12 for AARP members and $14 for nonmembers.

Cool island cuisine class planned
Abbey Golden will lead a demonstration cooking class from 5:30 to 7 p.m. Aug. 28 at Hale Halawai.
Students will learn to prepare a no-cook meal, perfect for hot summer nights. The menu includes a Thai beef salad with a little spice, a chilled mango ginger curry soup made with fresh island mangoes and a lemongrass ginger iced tea. The entire meal is served chilled and is perfect for a cool lunch or prepared ahead for an easy dinner.
The $15 class fee includes recipes and food tasting.

One Island announces sustainability contest
Hawaii Island inventors, writers, designers, students and “geniuses” may enter to win a 2012 Sustainability Innovation Challenge Award.
Entries are due Aug. 31. Award winners will be announced at the Green Living Fair Oct. 6, and the first place winner will be featured at the Farm-to-Fork Dinner at Kealakekua Bay Bed and Breakfast that evening.
