Coffee berry borer workshop slated
Luis Aristizabal, a coffee berry borer expert from Colombia, is the featured speaker for a CBB integrated pest management workshop planned from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Friday and Saturday at the Kona Hongwanji Mission in Kealakekua.
Attendees will learn about successful borer management techniques. They will also learn about the pest’s behaviors — when it swarms, when it moves into the trees — and the proper times to spray and trap the beetle, as well as effective harvest techniques. Two days of classroom and field lectures will cover effective control of the coffee berry borer.
Aristizabal has spent his career focusing on control of pests in coffee and has researched coffee berry borer management for many years. While with coffee research organization Cenicafe, he published a number of studies on biological control.
The $25 registration fee includes lunch on Friday. Register at kohalacenter.org/cbbworkshop/registration.html, or contact Cortney Hoffman at 887-6411 or choffman@kohalacenter.org.

Free concert scheduled at Dragonfly Ranch
The Dragonfly Ranch: Healing Arts Center in Honaunau is hosting a concert of jazz and Broadway favorites beginning at 6 p.m. Friday. The concert, featuring cabaret singers Patrice Fitzgerald and Richard Leslie, will be accompanied by Loren Wilken on piano.
Fitzgerald and Leslie are traveling from Connecticut to share their musical passions, celebrating Fitzgerald’s birthday. Wilken has played jazz and classical piano at the resorts on the Kohala Coast for many years. His music has been featured on both “Oprah” and “Dateline.” Wilken will perform some of his original pieces on keyboard.
Fitzgerald and Leslie will be singing romantic ballads such as “Summertime” and “Some Enchanted Evening” as well as standards like “I Got Rhythm” and “All of Me.”
Guests are invited to arrive early to walk the colorful labyrinth, view the five-room bed-and-breakfast and experience the eco-spa facilities. Pupu and avocado/raw cacao mousse will be shared with guests attending the show.
The public is invited to attend this free concert. Donations will be accepted to help cover expenses.

Workshop explores long-term effects of abuse on children
“Our Keiki, Our Kuleana,” a workshop addressing positive long-term outcomes for Hawaii’s children, building strong families and eliminating abuse, is slated for Saturday at the Waikoloa Beach Marriott Resort and Spa.
The workshop will feature a presentation by Robin Karr-Morse, an author and family therapist with more than 20 years experience in Oregon’s education and child welfare system. Karr-Morse has drawn together the latest science in psychology, biology, neurology and genetics to write two books that take readers inside the reality of early human development. “Ghosts from the Nursery” looks at the correlations between child abuse and neglect in the first three years of life and later developing aggression and violence. “Scared Sick” examines the role of early trauma in the later development of heart disease, addiction and a host of illnesses.
Karr-Morse views the goal of her work as empowering parents and persuading policymakers to reshape social policy to support families in building healthy children rather than continuing to build larger and larger systems to fix or contain broken adults. Her presentation will be followed by a panel of community resource leaders who will share information on the intervention and support systems in place locally.
Registration and continental breakfast begin at 8 a.m., with the presentation and community panel from 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Cost is $45 per person.
