Big Island police are searching for a 31-year-old man who reportedly escaped late Tuesday from a low-security jail in Hilo.

Big Island police are searching for a 31-year-old man who reportedly escaped late Tuesday from a low-security jail in Hilo.

Ryan Jeffries-Hamar who is on extended furlough and does not reside at Hale Nani Correctional Facility but is required to check-in monthly, reportedly left the facility on foot without completing the check-in process, said Toni Schwartz, state Department of Public Safety spokeswoman. His criminal history includes burglary, theft and unauthorized control of a propelled vehicle, she said, noting it is unlikely he is armed or dangerous.

Jeffries-Hamar is described as 5 feet 7 inches tall, weighing 165 pounds, with short brown hair and blue eyes, according to the Hawaii Police Department.

Anyone with information on his whereabouts is asked to call police immediately at 9-1-1 or 935-3311. Those who prefer to remain anonymous may call Crime Stoppers at 329-8181 in Kona or 961-8300 in Hilo. All Crime Stoppers information is kept confidential.
