A 24-year-old man was injured Tuesday evening when he apparently fell 30 feet from Pukihae Bridge in Hilo.

A 24-year-old man was injured Tuesday evening when he apparently fell 30 feet from Pukihae Bridge in Hilo.

Responding to the 9:50 p.m. report, fire rescue personnel found the man lying alongside Pukihae Stream, according to the Hawaii Fire Department. Despite the fall, he was verbally responsive.

The man was carried up a trail by rescue personnel and treated by medics at the scene. He was then transported to Hilo Medical Center for further evaluation, according to the department.

The northbound lane of Highway 19 remained closed for about an hour during the rescue operation, according to the department.
