BOURBONNAIS, Ill. — Chicago Bears linebacker Brian Urlacher had arthroscopic surgery on his left knee but still hopes to be ready for the season opener.
The Bears said that Urlacher had an arthroscopic procedure on Tuesday morning to help relieve swelling in the knee and was back at training camp by 10 a.m. He missed the offseason training program after spraining the medial collateral ligament and partially spraining the posterior cruciate ligament in the final game last season against Minnesota.
Peterson dons pads as
Vikings rb progresses
MANKATO, Minn. — Minnesota Vikings running back Adrian Peterson has taken another important step forward in his recovery from reconstructive surgery on his left knee: taking part in his first full-pads practice.
Peterson was finally cleared for full activity Tuesday. He carried the ball only a handful of times in full team drills with the first team offense, and he wasn’t touched by the defense.
That was the mandate from the coaching staff, to protect the Vikings star at all costs. Peterson said the precaution was unnecessary. He had a big smile on his face for much of the afternoon, except when he unsuccessfully lobbied the coaches to take a couple more snaps.
This was the first time since his injury on Dec. 24 he put shoulder pads on.
Rep: Lozada files for divorce from Johnson
NEW YORK — Evelyn Lozada is ending her 41-day-old marriage to Chad Johnson after the football star was arrested for allegedly head-butting her over the weekend.
A rep for the VH1 reality star confirmed reports that Lozada filed for divorce Tuesday.
“Given the recent events that have taken place, Evelyn has decided to file for divorce and move on with her life,” Lozada’s lawyer, Michael B. Gilden, told the TV show “The Insider” in a statement.
Rogers has blood
clot; Parker, Austin
face back issues
ALBANY, N.Y. — The interior of the New York Giants’ defensive line is facing questions after veteran Shaun Rogers was lost for the season with a blood clot in his left calf and two other defensive tackles were diagnosed with back problems, including one that will require season-ending surgery.
Coach Tom Coughlin announced Tuesday that Rogers’ treatment for the blood clot would prevent him from playing for the Super Bowl champions this season. His calf swelled after the Giants’ preseason opener against Jacksonville, but fellow tackle Linval Joseph said Rogers also was leg whipped in practice last week.
Marvin Austin, the team’s No. 2 draft pick in 2011, also was being seen by doctors in New York after his back acted up Monday night, a problem some players blamed on bad mattresses at training camp at the University at Albany.
Coughlin added free agent Marvin Parker needs surgery to repair a herniated disc that he injured the game Friday.
Flynn to get
2nd straight
start for Seattle
RENTON, Wash. — Even though Pete Carroll insists the competition is ongoing, it is clear Matt Flynn is the leading contender to be the Seattle Seahawks’ starting quarterback when the season begins.
Flynn will get his second straight preseason start for the Seahawks on Saturday night when Seattle travels to Denver, with rookie Russell Wilson expected to play the second half in a similar format to what the team followed last week against Tennessee.
Apparently left out of the rotation is incumbent starter Tarvaris Jackson, who took all the reps with the No. 1 offense as Seattle returned to practice on Tuesday, but will be shuffled to the end of the line and may see extremely limited action, if any, against the Broncos.
Broncos veteran guard
Kuper breaks forearm
ENGLEWOOD, Colo. — Denver Broncos right guard Chris Kuper broke his left forearm at practice Tuesday and could miss up to six weeks.
Kuper got caught at the bottom of a pile during team drills early in practice and retreated to the team’s Dove Valley headquarters for X-rays.
The Broncos said they expect Kuper to fully recover in four to six weeks.
He’ll be replaced by Manny Ramirez, a sixth-year pro who started at right guard in the team’s preseason opener at Chicago last week.
Redskins DT Neild out
for year with torn ACL
ASHBURN, Va. — Washington Redskins defensive tackle Chris Neild is out for the season with a knee injury.
Coach Mike Shanahan said Tuesday that Neild has a torn left ACL.
The second-year player was injured during Monday’s practice. He had the knee wrapped and did some running after he was hurt, but he was unable to return.
