Bernard “Sunshine” A. Soares, 71, of Keaau died July 19 at Hilo Medical Center. He was born on May 28, 1941 in Honolulu; he was a retired painting contractor and owner of SS Painting Company. He was also a commercial fisherman, professional boxer, hunter and a member of the Sure Foundation Church in Puna. Friends may call Saturday at the Glad Tidings Church in Hilo at 113 Kuawa Street, behind Ken’s Pancake House. Visitation is at 9 a.m. with memorial services to follow at 10 a.m. Casual attire is requested. He is survived by wife Rita J. Soares of Keaau; sons Derek (Tracy) Soares of Mountain View and Darren (Cynthia) Soares of Hilo; daughter Lisa L. Soares of Keaau; brother David A. Soares of Honolulu; sister Johnette (Linda) Fabra of Seattle, Washington; eight grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren; numerous nieces and nephews. Arrangements by Dodo Mortuary.
