A 21-year-old man was injured Monday afternoon after rolling his all terrain vehicle in a remote area of the Puuwaawaa Forest Reserve in North Kona.

The man had apparently been working within the Puuwaawaa Bird Sanctuary when he rolled the ATV in an inaccessible area about seven miles mauka of Mamalahoa Highway, according to the Hawaii Fire Department.

Both of the county’s helicopters, as well as ground crews, assisted in searching for the man, despite low-lying clouds and the need for four-wheel drive vehicles, according to the department.

The man was eventually located by one of the helicopters and transported with facial injuries, but in stable condition, to North Hawaii Community Hospital, according to the department.
