Pohakuloa Training Area is off limits to weekend hunters for the foreseeable future because of the many troop rotations coming to the Big Island.
The PTA command team will monitor the training schedule and, if there is a lull in training, may open selected areas for bow hunting of mammals.

Wahine Sailing
Regatta Aug. 25-26
The Kona Sailing Club Wahine Sailing Regatta will be Aug. 25-26 on the Kona Coast. Registration and sign-in will begin at 9 a.m. both days.
On Aug. 25, coffee and clinic begin at 9:30 a.m. U.S. sailing certified instructors will lead an on-land class covering teamwork, sail trim (getting the most out of your sails), race starts and strategy, and basic racing rules. An on-water clinic will follow, ending at 3 p.m. The cost is $10 for KSC members and $15 for non-members.
On Aug. 26, there will be a skipper and crew meeting beginning at 9:30 a.m. The race sequence will begin at 11:50 a.m. Wahine will sail two races and end the afternoon with heavy pupus and awards celebration at KSC clubhouse.
The cost is $15 for sailors (race and celebration), and $10 for meal only.

Youth coaching workshop Aug. 28
The Positive Coaching Alliance Big Island and the Hawaii County Department of Parks and Recreation will host a free “coaching for winning and life lessons” workshop at 6 p.m. Aug. 28 at the Waimea Community Center. Registration and check-in are at 5:30 p.m., and the workshop will go until 8 p.m. The workshop is mandatory for all youth coaches who will use county facilities for practices and games.
The workshop is free, but there is a fee of $6 to cover the cost of a PCA workbook. Each participant will receive a two-year certification for all parks and recreation leagues and youth leagues. The department encourages all coaches to attend.
The registration form is available at the recreation division office at 799 Piilani Street and online at hawaiicounty.gov/pr-recreation/ and can be dropped off or faxed over to the office. Attendees can pay for the book at the workshops. Walk-in registrations will also be accepted on the date of the workshop.

The Hawaii Police Department’s traffic services section and the Hawaii Island Police Activities League will conduct Click It or Ticket 3-on-3 Basketball Tournaments on the following dates:
c Aug. 24-26: Honokaa Parks and Recreation sports complex
c Sept. 8: Naalehu gymnasium
The tournaments offer five boys age divisions (5-6, 7-8, 9-10, 11-12, 13-14), a high school boys division, three girls age divisions (10-and-under, 12-and-under, 14-and-under) and a high school girls division. The tournament’s age cutoff date is Dec. 31, 2011.
Each division has a limit of 10 teams. Teams interested in participating must complete registration materials two weeks prior to the start of a tournament.
Submit registration packets at the community policing office (formerly the receiving desk in the public safety building) in Hilo or the Kona police receiving desk.
Interested teams may also fax materials to 961-2209 in East Hawaii or 327-3583 in West Hawaii.

Rain Forest Runs Saturday in Volcano
The third annual Volcano Art Center Rain Forest Runs will take place Saturday at Cooper Center in Volcano.
The event will begin at 7 a.m. with a half-marathon. A 10-kilometer run will follow at 7:30 a.m., with a 5K run/walk set for 7:45.
The entry fee is $75 for the half-marathon, $45 for the 10K and $35 for the 5K. Those wanting to register for the half-marathon must do so by 6 p.m. Friday. Athletes may register in person from 2 to 6 p.m. at Volcano Art Center’s Niaulani Campus.
Athletes can register for the 10K and 5K runs until 7 a.m. on race morning.
Also, a carbo-loading dinner will take place from 5 to 7 p.m. in the Kilauea Military Camp’s cafeteria. The cost is $15 for those age 12 and up and $8.50 for children ages 6-11.

Mitsubishi Electric tickets on sale
Mitsubishi Electric Championship at Hualalai tickets are on sale. The Champions Tour’s season-opening event will take place Jan. 16-20 at Hualalai Golf Course at the Four Seasons Resort.
Weekly grounds tickets are available in advance for $25, and a one day grounds pass is $15. Youth 18 and under are admitted free with a ticketed adult. Tickets may be purchased online at pgatour.com/tickets, or by calling 800-417-2770.

Fall Kupuna softball league starting soon
The fall Kupuna softball league will start play Sept. 9. The league is for players, men and women, 50 years and older. The league will play on Sunday mornings at 9:30 a.m. and will run through Nov. 18. The league will play one nine inning game each Sunday at the Old Kona Airport Park fields.
