FORT LEE, N.J. — An athlete competing in the Ironman U.S. Championship in New York City and New Jersey died Saturday after having a medical problem during the swimming portion of the grueling triathlon, race officials said.
The competitor “experienced distress” during a 2.4-mile swim in the Hudson River at the start of the all-day competition, a publicist for the race organizers said.
The swimmer was pulled out of the water and taken to a hospital in nearby Englewood Cliffs, N.J., but did not survive. The organizers said the cause of death is unknown. An autopsy is planned.
New York City police said the contestant was a 43-year-old man. His name has not yet been released.
Chad Johnson arrested on domestic violence charge
DAVIE, Fla. — Dolphins receiver Chad Johnson was arrested Saturday on a domestic violence charge, accused of head-butting his newlywed wife during an argument in front of their home outside Miami.
Johnson and his wife, Evelyn Lozada, were at dinner, and she confronted him about a receipt she had found for a box of condoms, said Davie police Capt. Dale Engle. The argument got heated and continued on the drive home, he said.
When they arrived in their driveway in Davie, the 34-year-old Johnson head-butted Lozada, she told police. Lozada, who is on the reality show, “Basketball Wives,” was treated at a hospital for a cut to her forehead, Engle said.
Johnson, was being held Saturday night in Broward County Jail where he will remain until he can appear before a judge, which Engle says might not be until Monday. He is charged with simple battery, domestic violence, which is a misdemeanor.
Edwards wins Nationwide race
WATKINS GLEN, N.Y. —When push came to shove, Carl Edwards got the best of Brad Keselowski.
Edwards, making his first Nationwide start of the season, beat Keselowski on a two-lap dash to the checkered flag on Saturday and won the Zippo 200 at Watkins Glen International.
Austin Dillon’s blown right front tire brought out the final stoppage of the 82-lap race around the 11-turn, 2.45-mile layout, and Edwards beat his long-time nemesis on a restart for the second straight time in the race.
Djokovic advances
to Rogers Cup final
TORONTO — Top-seeded Novak Djokovic advanced to the Rogers Cup final, beating fellow Serb Janko Tipsarevic 6-4, 6-1 on Saturday night in the rain-delayed tournament.
Djokovic, the winner of the hardcourt event in 2007 and 2011, will race Richard Gasquet in the final. The Frenchman, seeded 14th, beat John Isner 7-6 (3), 6-3.
Wozniak falls in Montreal quarters
MONTREAL — Seventh-seeded Carolina Wozniacki ended Canadian Aleksandra Wozniak’s run in the Rogers Cup, beating the Quebec favorite 6-4, 6-4 in the quarterfinals Saturday night.
Earlier in the day, Wozniak finished off a rain-delayed match by topping Christina McHale 7-6 (5), 6-3. Wozniacki playing the full match Saturday, beating Varvara Lepchenko 4-6, 6-3, 6-4 in the afternoon.
In the semifinals, Wozniacki will face fifth-seeded Petra Kvitova, a 6-3, 6-2 winner over Tamira Paszek.
In the other quarterfinals, 10th-seeded Na Li beat second-seeded Agnieszka Radwanska 6-2, 6-1, and 16th-seeded Lucie Safarova topped Roberta Vinci 6-2, 6-2.
