The public is invited to learn to meditate or improve meditation skills, according to the authentic teachings of Buddha.

The discourse of a 4 to 5:30 p.m. Sunday session at the chapel at Kilauea Military Camp will be “The True Nature of Reality.”

The opening meditation will be on the nature of the mind, and the closing meditation will be on “dream appearances.”

The chapel is adjacent to the theater in Hawaii Volcanoes National Park. The class is free. Entrance to the park is also free for those attending chapel services; tell the ranger at the gate. Dress warmly and bring a cushion.

Honokaa gym reopens

The County of Hawaii Department of Parks and Recreation reopened the Honokaa Gymnasium on Thursday following the completion of a two-month repair project to replace the facility’s roof.

The contractor, Ivan Mochida Contracting Inc., replaced the roof over the main courts, installed new thermal insulation and replaced numerous steel framing members.

Work was also completed earlier than anticipated.

The gym’s exterior will be repainted during the next several weeks. That work is not anticipated to disrupt use of the facility.

For more information on gym hours as well the availability for reservations, call the gym’s recreation director Anna Muranaka at 775-7505.

Walk with the Friends
on Sunday in Hawaii Volcanoes National Park

Volcanologist Cheryl Gansecki and The Friends of Hawaii Volcanoes Park will gather on Sunday for a “Sunday Walk in the Park.”

The walk is expected to last from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Gansecki has worked as a geologist at the Hawaiian Volcano Observatory mapping lava flows on Mauna Loa and as a lecturer at the University of Hawaii at Hilo.

She has led tours for teachers, Elderhostel and other educational programs within the national park.

The group will explore features from Footprints Trail to Mauna Iki on a moderate four-mile hike along hardened lava trails.

Be prepared for variable weather conditions. Hikers should be in good condition and able to do without shade all morning in a remote, rugged area.

FHVNP’s monthly second-Sunday hike is free for members.

Nonmembers are welcome to join the nonprofit organization in order to attend. Annual memberships are $30 for individuals and $45 for families.

To register, call the Friends at 985-7373 or visit fhvnp.org.
