LONDON — Dwyane Wade’s recovery from knee surgery is right on schedule, and the All-Star guard expects to be ready to go when the Miami Heat open the defense of their NBA championship.
The way he was walking around London on Wednesday, it would have been tough to guess he had surgery a month ago.
“I feel good. Rehab is going very well,” Wade told The Associated Press. “I’m happy with it. I’m more encouraged than I was, obviously, when I knew I had to get surgery. So I’m happy.”
Wade was in London making a promotional appearance at NBA House for Gatorade, one of his longtime sponsors, and its sports science institute.
DAs want Penn St. fines to fund PA child centers
PHILADELPHIA — Prosecutors in Pennsylvania hope to steer some of the $60 million in fines Penn State must pay the NCAA over the Jerry Sandusky sex-abuse scandal to children’s advocacy centers across the state.
The group is not seeking a specific amount of money, but wants to add to the 21 advocacy centers that now exist across 67 counties, Philadelphia District Attorney Seth Williams said.
The centers offer a single place for children to tell their stories of abuse to a trained interviewer, while police, therapists and others watch remotely. This prevents children from having to tell their stories repeatedly to various experts. The centers also offer various services or referrals to the victim and family members.
Preds sued over ‘human hockey puck’ accident
NASHVILLE, Tenn. — A Nashville radio personality is suing the NHL’s Predators over an injury from the “human hockey puck” stunt.
The suit by Adam “Intern Adam” Davis of WRVW-FM was filed this week in Davidson County Circuit Court and seeks $25,000 for medical bills.
The lawsuit said the Predators invited Davis to do the stunt between periods Dec. 13 and he was injured practicing it.
The trick was supposed to use a sled and giant slingshot to propel Davis across the ice rink into bowling pins. The suit, first reported by The City Paper, claims that Davis instead was thrown into the side of rink, broke his ankle and had to undergo surgery.
A spokeswoman for the Predators said Wednesday that the team doesn’t comment on pending litigation.
Browns’ Richardson to see specialist
BEREA, Ohio — Trent Richardson’s ailing left knee may be more seriously injured than the Cleveland Browns thought
The team issued a one-sentence statement Wednesday saying that the running back, picked No. 3 overall in April’s draft, will see a specialist on Thursday. The statement says: “Trent Richardson is traveling to Pensacola, Fla., where he will have his left knee further evaluated by Dr. James Andrews tomorrow.”
Richardson, who played at Alabama, had an MRI in Cleveland on Tuesday. Results have not been revealed. He is going to see Andrews for a second opinion.
Andrews has been Richardson’s surgeon since the running back was a high school star. He performed the surgery to repair a torn meniscus in February.
Lions safety Delmas has knee surgery
ALLEN PARK, Mich. — The Detroit Lions lost the quarterback of their secondary, leaving one of the team’s weakest units from last season short-handed.
Safety Louis Delmas had surgery on his left knee Tuesday and will be evaluated weekly.
“As soon as he is able to get out and go and keep it from getting sore, then he’ll be back,” Detroit coach Jim Schwartz said Wednesday.
Delmas started the first 11 games of last season but missed the final five after injuring his right knee — that later needed surgery — in a Thanksgiving loss to Green Bay. He had been icing his left knee during training camp this year.
The four-year veteran started 30 of his first 32 games after Detroit selected him in the second round of the 2009 draft.
Delmas had not practiced in a week.
Hyo-Joo Kim advances in US Women’s Amateur
CLEVELAND — Qualifying medalist Hyo-Joo Kim advanced to the second round of match play in the U.S. Women’s Amateur on Wednesday, routing 14-year-old Megan Khang of Rockland, Mass., 7 and 6.
The 17-year-old Kim, from South Korea, will face University of Florida player Isabelle Lendl on Thursday at The Country Club. Lendl, the daughter of former tennis star Ivan Lendl, beat Australia’s Whitney Hillier 2 and 1.
“My putter was working well today,” Kim said through her caddie, Euna Pak. “I’m happy with how I played today. With a match coming up tomorrow, I’ll try to get some rest.”
In the lower-bracket, 15-year-old Lydia Ko of New Zealand, second in stroke-play qualifying, topped Amy Beth Simanton of Lake Oswego, Ore., 4 and 3.
Saints wiretapping probe ongoing
NEW ORLEANS — Louisiana State Police Col. Mike Edmonson says he still has an investigator working with the FBI on wiretapping allegations involving the New Orleans Saints but adds that no evidence has been turned over to federal prosecutors at this time.
Authorities have been working on the case since April, when ESPN, citing anonymous sources, said Superdome wiring was rigged so Saints general manager Mickey Loomis could listen to opposing teams’ radio communications during games.
Loomis and the Saints have denied those allegations, and the Saints have hired the firm of former FBI director Louis Freeh to do its own investigation.
Olympic champ Murray advances in Toronto
TORONTO — Olympic champion Andy Murray won his opening match in the Rogers Cup on Wednesday, beating Italy’s Flavio Cipolla 6-1, 6-3.
Murray, the second-seeded British star who beat Roger Federer on Sunday in London for the gold medal, set up a third-round match against Canada’s Milos Raonic.
Raonic beat Murray in the Barcelona semifinals nearly four months ago.
Top-seeded Novak Djokovic also won, beating Bernard Tomic 6-2, 6-3. Djokovic won the event in 2007 and 2011.
Kvitova rallies past Pervak at Rogers Cup
MONTREAL — Fifth-seeded Petra Kvitova rallied to beat Ksenia Pervak 4-6, 7-6 (0), 6-0 on Wednesday night in the second round of the Rogers Cup.
Kvitova, the 2011 Wimbledon champion, quickly finished off Pervak after the match was delayed for 30 minutes by rain with the players tied 4-4 in the second set.
In other second-round matches, fourth-seeded Sam Stosur led Simona Halep 7-5, 4-4 when Halep retired because of left thigh injury; eighth-seeded Sara Errani beat Jana Cepelova 6-3, 6-2, and 16th-seeded Lucie Safarova edged Sesil Karatantcheva 6-4, 6-4.
