RENTON, Wash. — For this week and the preseason opener, Matt Flynn is the Seattle Seahawks’ starting quarterback.
Beyond Saturday night against Tennessee, coach Pete Carroll is keeping it a mystery.
“You’ll have to wait and see,” Carroll said. “Wait and see. Taking one week at a time.”
The decision to announce the quarterback plans for the preseason opener is the first definitive move Carroll and the Seahawks have made in their three-way quarterback competition.
Flynn will take all the reps with the first-team offense for the rest of this week — beginning with Wednesday’s practice — and play the entire first half. Rookie Russell Wilson will play the second half against the Titans, leaving incumbent Tarvaris Jackson on the sideline as a spectator.
Day after Jets brawl,
Ryan punishes team
CORTLAND, N.Y. — Rex Ryan ordered his players to cut out all the nonsense.
When the New York Jets ignored their coach, it was time to run. And run some more.
A day after a 20-player throwdown highlighted a chippy practice, Ryan had his players run a series of sprints Tuesday as punishment for a few minor scuffles on the field.
Elvis Dumervil won’t be
charged in road rage case
ENGLEWOOD, Colo. — Pro Bowl defensive end Elvis Dumervil of the Denver Broncos won’t be charged in a road rage incident in Miami Beach, Fla.
His lawyer, Harvey Steinberg, said the Miami-Dade County state’s attorney informed him Tuesday that Dumervil had been cleared in the case. Dumervil had been arrested on a charge of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon.
A relieved Dumervil said he knew he “didn’t do anything wrong” but was “in the wrong place at the wrong time.”
Cardinals QB Kolb’s injury
minor, expected to play
ST. JOSEPH, Mo. — Arizona Cardinals coach Ken Whisenhunt calls Kevin Kolb’s injury minor and expects the quarterback to play in Friday’s preseason game against Kansas City.
Kolb left Sunday’s Hall of Fame game with bruised ribs and was limited in practice Tuesday.
“He’s still a little sore,” Whisenhunt said, “but I don’t anticipate there being any problems as we progress through the week. He may be limited this afternoon, but I certainly think as the week progresses he’ll be fine, and he’ll play.”
Kolb is locked in a tight battle with John Skelton for the starting job. He started but was intercepted on his first throw in Sunday’s 17-10 loss to New Orleans. His lone completion came on his final throw, the first play of his third series, and the play on which he was injured. Against New Orleans, Kolb completed 1 of 4 passes for four yards. Skelton was 4 of 6 for 32 yards.
Browns rookie RB Trent
Richardson skips practice
BEREA, Ohio — Trent Richardson may miss his first game for the Cleveland Browns.
The highly regarded rookie was not in pads, his left leg was wrapped, and he did not participate in practice at all on Tuesday.
It could be the result of going full-bore the past two weeks on a knee that was surgically repaired this spring. That’s one of the reasons Richardson did not fully participate in the NFL combine in April.
