Hawaii punter pleads no contest to drunk driving

HONOLULU — University of Hawaii punter Alex Dunnachie is suspended for an indefinite number of games after pleading no contest to drunk driving.

The 21-year-old was arrested in Honolulu last month and was released on $500 bail.

Head coach Norm Chow said the team’s only punter will be allowed to join training camp on Monday. Friday’s suspension announcement comes hours after Dunnachie’s plea in court.

Dunnachie is scheduled to be sentenced on Aug. 24.

Quarterback Cayman Shutter and linebacker Alema Tachibana were arrested in March and June. Shutter pleaded no contest to DUI and was suspended for the season’s first four games. Tachibana pleaded not guilty to drunk driving and trial is scheduled for Oct. 15.

UCI tries to block USADA charges against Armstrong

NEW YORK — Cycling’s international governing body is trying to block the case American anti-doping officials filed against Lance Armstrong, saying there may be a lack of due process and that witnesses were promised “advantages” in exchange for incriminating statements against the seven-time Tour de France winner.

The U.S. Anti-Doping Agency brought charges of performance-enhancing drug use against Armstrong in June, threatening to strip him of his victories. A federal grand jury investigation of the cyclist ended four months earlier without any indictments.

Fish, Haas to meet
in Citi Open semifinals

WASHINGTON — Mardy Fish and Tommy Haas will meet in the Citi Open semifinals today, their first matchup since 2007.

Fish beat Xavier Malisse 6-3, 6-4 on Friday. The fourth-seeded Haas routed Tobias Kamke 6-1, 6-2. Haas is 3-1 against Fish.

Fish reached the semifinals in the tournament for the first time in seven tries. Haas, also making his seventh appearance in the event, reached the semifinals in 2008, too.

Second-seeded Alexandr Dolgopolov will face No. 8 Sam Querrey in the other semifinal. Querrey, the winner last week in Los Angeles, beat No. 3 Kevin Anderson 6-4, 6-4, and Dolgopolov topped James Blake 7-6 (3), 6-4.

Top-seeded Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova advanced to the women’s final with a 4-6, 7-5, 6-4 victory over No. 4 Vania King. Pavlyuchenkova will face Magdalena Rybarikova, a 6-3, 6-3 winner over third-seeded Sloane Stephens.

Pavlyuchenkova received treatment for a heat-related illness on the humid, 94-degree day.
