The fourth bienniel “Abstract Only,” juried exhibit is set to open today with a reception for the 53 artists who with 89 abstract works of art accepted into the show.
The reception begins at 5 p.m. with winners and awards being announced at 5:30 p.m. Entertainment will be provided by the Sunset Grove Machine.
Potluck refreshments will be served. The reception is also a great chance to meet the artists and the juror, Kevin Diminyatz, who will also have some of his abstract artwork on display.
The Wailoa Arts and Cultural Center is open daily from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., except Wednesdays, weekends and state holidays.

Honaunau artist
to show sculptures
Honaunau artist Jozuf Hadley will display several of his reclaimed objects sculptures through Aug. 30 at the Hilo Wailoa Arts and Cultural Center. The show’s official opening is slated for 5 to 7 p.m. today at the center.
Hadley’s reclaimed objects sculptures range in height from 1 foot to 7 feet. The sculptures combine natural objects and manmade items, including children’s blocks, wooden tools and pieces of fine Asian art. The natural objects include boar’s teeth, bone disks, shells, pearls, jade, coconuts, turquoise and lauhala.
Hadley began his art career in the 1960s when he created a stir in the Honolulu art community by covering nude models under large plaster-soaked sheets, which he called figurecasting.
The artist’s recent exhibitions include the Id-Space Gallery, the Wailoa Art Center 2011, the SKEA 2012 Annual Exhibition, the Living Arts Gallery in Hawi, and the 2012 juried Hawaii Craftsmen Show, among others.
Hadley is also the creator and co-host of the South Kona Artists’ Association.

Waimea art show celebrates equine and paniolo
During the month of August, the Waimea Arts Council is hosting an art show based on “The Life of the Paniolo” at the Firehouse Gallery in Waimea.
The exhibition features equine- and paniolo-themed art by well-known and up-and-coming artists from Hawaii Island. The show runs though Aug. 31 and will have art work both on display and for sale. It will be also held in conjunction with the fifth annual Hawaii Horse Expo held in Waimea.
The public is invited to attend the artist reception slated for 3 to 7 p.m. on Aug. 11. They can also view the show during regular gallery hours, which are 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Wednesday through Saturday. Gallery hours are subject to volunteer availability.
The Firehouse Gallery is a program of the Waimea Arts Council and is located in downtown Waimea at the intersection of Mamalahoa Highway and Lindsey Road. The Waimea Arts Council is an all-volunteer organization that sponsors programs, exhibits and arts education.
