FORT WAYNE, Ind. — Tyler McDaniel of Manchester, Ky., shot a 3-under 69 on Wednesday to take the second-round lead in the Junior PGA Championship, and defending champion Ariya Jutanugarn of Thailand had a 70 to remain on top in the girls’ division.
The 16-year-old McDaniel had a 7-under 137 total at Sycamore Hills. Jim Liu of Smithtown, N.Y., the 2010 U.S. Junior Amateur winner, was a stroke back after a 71.
“I just played solid from tee to green,” McDaniel said. “I have my putter going so well so far. It’s saved shots, it’s given me scoring opportunities and that’s what you need to win.”
Liu closed with a bogey on the par-4 ninth.
Beau Hossler, the 17-year-old Mission Viejo, Calif., player who tied for 29th in the U.S. Open in June, followed his opening 68 with a 77 to drop to 1 over. J.B. Williams of Danville, Ky., the first-round leader after matching the course record with a 65, also was 1 over after an 80.
The 16-year-old Jutanugarn, a 10-stroke winner last year, was 8 under — two strokes ahead of 15-year-old Samantha Wagner of Windermere, Fla. Wagner shot a 71.
Jose Canseco files Chapter 7 bankruptcy in Nevada
LAS VEGAS — Former Oakland Athletics slugger Jose Canseco has filed for bankruptcy protection in Nevada.
The 1986 American League rookie of the year and 1988 league MVP with the A’s is seeking asset liquidation in Chapter 7 documents filed Tuesday in U.S. Bankruptcy Court in Las Vegas.
Canseco’s bankruptcy attorney, Mark Segal declined to comment Wednesday.
The bankruptcy petition says the 48-year-old Canseco lives in Las Vegas. The filing was first reported by the Las Vegas Sun.
It lists less than $21,000 in assets and almost $1.7 million in liabilities, including more than $500,000 owed to the Internal Revenue Service.
Canseco hit 462 home runs during 16 years on eight major league teams. He was a six-time All-Star and two-time World Series winner.
He later admitted using performance-enhancing drugs.
Mayweather due for Friday release from Vegas jail
LAS VEGAS — Floyd Mayweather Jr. is due for release from a Las Vegas jail by the weekend after serving two months in a domestic battery case.
Records show the 35-year-old undefeated champion is due for release Friday from the Clark County Detention Center.
Las Vegas police Officer Jose Hernandez said Wednesday that Mayweather was granted time off his 90-day sentence for work and good behavior.
Mayweather surrendered for jail June 1 after pleading guilty in December to misdemeanor charges in a September 2010 scuffle with his girlfriend, Josie Harris, while two of their children watched.
The plea deal avoided a trial on felony charges that could have gotten Mayweather up to 34 years in prison.
Mayweather promoter Leonard Ellerbe didn’t respond this week to messages.
100 players on Hawaii training camp roster
HONOLULU — University of Hawaii Warriors will number 100 when players report for the start of training camp under new head coach Norm Chow.
The first practice for the Warriors is scheduled for Thursday.
The Honolulu Star-Advertiser reports Chow would like to cap the roster at 102 — three fewer than the NCAA limit for training camp.
Quarterback Cayman Shutter will be in the camp despite being suspended for the first four games of the season after pleading no contest to drunk driving.
Ex-NFL running back Jamal Lewis arrested in Georgia
JONESBORO, Ga. — Former NFL running back Jamal Lewis has been released from a Georgia jail after he was arrested for allegedly not paying child support.
Clayton County sheriff’s spokesman Capt. Brian Crisp says the 32-year-old Lewis was charged with child abandonment, a misdemeanor. Crisp says Lewis was released on bond shortly after midnight Wednesday.
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reports (https://bit.ly/MZD8LI that Lewis was booked in the Clayton County jail around 11 p.m. Tuesday. An arrest warrant alleges that Lewis had no contact with his son for more than a year.
Lewis filed for bankruptcy in April, listing $14.5 million in assets and $10.6 million in debts.
Lewis retired in 2009 after nine seasons with the Baltimore Ravens and Cleveland Browns. In 2003, Lewis ran for 2,066 yards — the second-highest total in NFL history.
Indians place Travis Hafner on paternity list
KANSAS CITY, Mo. — The Cleveland Indians have placed designed hitter Travis Hafner on the paternity list Wednesday and recalled utility player Vinny Rottino from Triple-A Columbus.
Hafner can remain on the paternity list for a maximum of three days. He is hitting .230 with 10 home runs and 29 RBIs in 50 games.
The 32-year-old Rottino was claimed on waivers June 27 from the New York Mets and hit .299 in 30 games with Columbus. He has a career .188 batting average in 44 games in the majors with Milwaukee, Florida and the Mets.
King, Vandeweghe move to Washington quarterfinals
WASHINGTON — Seeded for the first time on the WTA Tour, Coco Vandeweghe brushed off the notion that she was under added pressure.
In fact, she barely even knew she was seeded before the Citi Open started.
“I didn’t know I was seeded until I got the schedule and saw there was a seven next to my name,” Vandeweghe said. “I don’t look at the draw, but I thought it was pretty cool to be seeded.”
Vandeweghe topped qualifier Aravane Rezai 6-2, 6-2 to advance to the quarterfinals Tuesday. She’ll meet No. 4 Vania King, who beat Irina Falconi 6-2, 7-6 (5), in an all-American quarterfinal.
Rays release Hideki Matsui
OAKLAND, Calif. — The Tampa Bay Rays have granted Hideki Matsui his release.
Matsui was designated for assignment last week and manager Joe Maddon said Wednesday that the team released Matsui at his request.
Matsui is now free to sign with any team. The 38-year-old was batting .147 with two homers and seven RBIs and was hitless in his last 16 trips to the plate.
