NEW YORK — Chris Davis hit a go-ahead grand slam in a seven-run second inning, and the Baltimore Orioles rallied from five runs down to beat the New York Yankees 11-5 on Tuesday.

Nick Markakis had a two-run homer among his three hits for the Orioles, who have won four of their last six but finished July 13-14, their first month below .500 all season.

Ivan Nova (10-5) allowed a career-high nine runs in five innings for New York, which tied a season-worst skid with four straight losses and made some dubious history in the process. According to STATS, LLC, the Yankees haven’t led by five or more after the first inning and then trailed after the second since at least 1918.

The Yankees have lost nine of 12.

Chris Tillman (4-1) was charged with four earned runs.

ANGELS 6, RANGERS 2

ARLINGTON, Texas — Albert Pujols hit two home runs, and Jered Weaver won his eighth straight start, leading the Angels over the Rangers.

Mike Trout also homered as Los Angeles beat the AL West leaders for the second straight day. The charging Angels and Rangers have two games left in the series.

Weaver (14-1) gave up two runs and five hits in 6 1⁄3 innings. He became the eighth AL pitcher since 1921 to win at least six games without a loss in July.

ROYALS 8, INDIANS 3

KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Alcides Escobar drove in three runs, Luke Hochevar pitched six solid innings, and the Royals beat the Indians to snap a five-game losing streak.

Escobar had two hits for his 34th multihit game, raising his average to a team-leading .307.

Hochevar (7-9) gave up three runs on seven hits and three walks. He struck out six.

Indians starter Derek Lowe (8-10) failed to finish the third and balked in a run. Lowe was pulled after allowing seven runs on eight hits, two walks and a balk in 2 1⁄3 innings.

RED SOX 4, TIGERS 1 (6)

BOSTON — Clayton Mortensen pitched 2 2⁄3 shutout innings after Josh Beckett left with back spasms, and the Red Sox beat the Tigers in a game halted by rain in the top of the sixth inning.

Detroit had the bases loaded with two outs when the tarp was rolled onto the field. The game was called 1 hour, 45 minutes later, giving the Red Sox their fourth straight win and sending the Tigers to their fifth loss in six games.

WHITE SOX 4, TWINS 3

MINNEAPOLIS — A.J. Pierzynski hit a two-run home run in the ninth inning, and the White Sox held on to beat the Twins.

After Alex Rios singled off Jeff Gray (5-1), Pierzynski hit a 0-2 pitch into the right field bleachers for his second homer in as many nights.

Matt Thornton (3-6) pitched a 1-2-3 eighth for the win.

Addison Reed allowed an RBI single to Denard Span in the bottom of the ninth, but still earned his 17th save in 20 chances.

Rays 8, Athletics 0

OAKLAND, Calif. — James Shields pitched a three-hitter, B.J. Upton drove in two runs, and Tampa Bay broke out of its prolonged offensive slump to beat the Athletics.

Sam Fuld had three hits, Upton added two, and six different players drove in runs for the Rays. Tampa Bay went into the game last in the majors in hitting and had scored only nine runs in its previous four games before knocking A’s starter Tommy Milone (9-8) around for two runs in the second and three in the fifth.

That was all Shields (9-7) needed to secure his seventh career shutout.

He gave up a one-out single to Chris Carter in the second, a leadoff single to Jemile Weeks in the fourth and a two-out single to George Kottaras in the eighth.

MARINERS 7, BLUE JAYS 2

SEATTLE — Dustin Ackley drove in three runs, and Jason Vargas pitched seven strong innings to lead the Mariners to their sixth consecutive victory.

Vargas (12-7) allowed two runs and five hits. He walked one and struck out four. The last time the Mariners won six consecutive games was May 18-23, 2011.

Toronto starter Aaron Laffey (2-2) lasted just 4 2⁄3 innings, allowing nine hits and seven runs.
