A Japanese visitor apparently drowned Monday in Kailua-Kona, police said.

A 60-year-old man, whose name was being withheld pending notification of his family, died at Kona Community Hospital Monday morning, after Royal Kona Resort employees and bystanders pulled him from the water. Police said the man was unconscious.

Bystanders and police officers performed cardiopulmonary resuscitation until Fire Department personnel arrived.

Police have classified the case as a coroner’s inquest. They have ordered an autopsy to determine the cause of death. — WHT
