The Hawaii Police Department is asking all motorists to avoid Kawaihae Road near mile marker 64 because of a small brush fire, according to a news release issued at 12:41 p.m. today.
One lane of Kawaihae Road is closed because of the fire. Traffic will be slow because of equipment and personnel on the road. Motorists in the area should use caution when driving and keep in mind that closures may occur for the next hour or so, police said.
If possible, motorists should use Highway 190 and Waikoloa Road as an alternate route to Kona, police said.
