Marilyn Koschella, oil painter and crocheted lei maker, is Kailua Village Artists’ featured artist for August.
Koschella discovered her love for painting when she studied costume design in college. Part of her studies involved painting a picture of what she was designing.
Over the decades, she has stretched her artistic abilities to include pottery, mosaic tile pictures and papier-mache projects.
In 1996, Koschella focused on oil painting and studied watercolor painting techniques. In 2001, she started using the palette knife in her oil painting.
Koschella became captivated by the “aloha spirit” she experienced during her first trip to Hawaii in 1962. Over the years she made many trips back to the islands, until finally settling in Kailua-Kona when she retired in 2008.
After moving to Kailua-Kona, Koschella started making crocheted lei, using a variety of color combinations and kukui nuts. Since 2009, she has been oil painting with the West Hawaii Plein Air Painters. In 2010, she joined the Kona Arts Center and also became a member of the Blue Sea Artisans. In 2011, she joined the Kailua Village Artists.
The public is invited to see Koschella’s latest work, talk story and learn about her oil painting and crocheted lei making from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. on Aug. 15 and 20 at the Kailua Village Artists Gallery at Alii Sunset Plaza and from 9:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Aug. 10 and 29 at the gallery within the Outrigger Keauhou Beach Resort.
