Cibulkova beats Bartoli to win Carlsbad title
CARLSBAD, Calif. — Second-seeded Dominique Cibulkova used her powerful ground strokes to defeat No. 1 seed Marion Bartoli 6-1, 7-5 and win the Mercury Insurance Open title on Sunday.
Cibulkova won her second career title and first since October. Cibulkova had lost four of her five previous title matches.
Bartoli had a tough time keeping up after spending more than eight hours on the court in winning her first three matches here.
Roddick beats Muller
to win Atlanta Open
ATLANTA — Winning tournaments never gets old for Andy Roddick.
Roddick beat Gilles Muller of Luxembourg 1-6, 7-6 (2), 6-2 to win the Atlanta Open and earn his 32nd ATP World Tour title on Sunday.
After the match ended, Roddick celebrated by gently tossing his racquet into the stands. A few minutes later, he handed the trophy to a random fan who seemed surprised.
Roddick, 29, ranks third among active players in career titles behind Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal.
After taking the Eastbourne title before Wimbledon, Roddick has won two of his past three events and 11 of 12 matches. He will play for the U.S. team when the Olympics begin next week at Wimbledon.
Muller, 29, was denied his first tour victory in three tries.
Hercog wins 2nd straight Swedish Open
BASTAD, Sweden — Polona Hercog won her second consecutive Swedish Open title Sunday after recovering from a shaky start to beat Mathilde Johansson of France 0-6, 6-4, 7-5.
The Slovenian racked up unforced errors in the first set and appeared to be headed for defeat but sharpened her focus in the second. She controlled the match to go up 5-1 in the third but then lost her concentration once again, allowing Johansson to fight back to 5-5.
Hercog recovered by breaking Johansson in the next game and then serving out the match.
Monaco edges Haas
to win Hamburg final
HAMBURG, Germany — Third-seeded Juan Monaco edged German veteran Tommy Haas 7-5, 6-4 Sunday in the final of the German Tennis Championships for his third clay-court title of the year.
Bellucci upsets Tipsarevic in Swiss final
GSTAAD, Switzerland — Unseeded Brazilian Thomaz Bellucci upset top-seeded Janko Tipsarevic of Serbia, 6-7 (6), 6-4, 6-2 in the Swiss Open final on Sunday.
Bellucci, ranked No. 60, got his third career title and second at Gstaad. He won the clay-court event as a qualifier in 2009.
Sadler holds off Stenhouse, wins at Chicagoland
JOLIET, Ill. — Elliott Sadler held off a charge by Ricky Stenhouse Jr. on a green-white-checker finish to win the NASCAR Nationwide Series race at Chicagoland Speedway on Sunday.
Stenhouse appeared to have the stronger car and was chasing down Sadler in the closing laps of the race. But a late caution bunched up the field for NASCAR’s version of overtime, and Sadler got a push from Justin Allgaier on the restart and pulled away.
Stenhouse finished second, followed by Allgaier, Kenny Wallace and Michael Annett.
