Police arrested 18 drivers for suspected drunken driving between July 9 and Sunday; four were involved in traffic accidents.

Police arrested 18 drivers for suspected drunken driving between July 9 and Sunday; four were involved in traffic accidents.

Police have made 745 suspected DUI arrests this year compared with 722 during the same period in 2011, according to the Hawaii Police Department.

Kona officers arrested 11 motorists while Puna officers arrested four. South Hilo officers arrested two motorists and South Kohala officers arrested one.

There have been 785 major accidents this year compared with 734 during the same period last year.

To date, there have been 19 traffic fatalities on Big Island public roadways, compared with 12 fatalities during the same period in 2011, according to police. To date, six of those fatalities were related to drugs, three to alcohol and two were a combination of both.
