A 41-year-old Waikoloa man died Sunday from injuries he received in a motor vehicle/motorcycle crash, occurring Friday on Route 190 near mile marker 17 in North Kona, according to the Hawaii Police Department.

Police identified him as Randall C. Guadiz of Waikoloa.

Responding to a 10:38 p.m. call Friday, Kona patrol officers determined Guadiz was operating a 1998 Honda motorcycle and traveling north on Route 190 when he overtook a vehicle in a no-passing zone and sideswiped a 2012 Toyota four-door sedan traveling south and being operated by a 45-year-old California woman.

Guadiz was wearing a helmet. Fire Rescue personnel took him to North Hawaii Community Hospital. He was later flown to The Queen’s Medical Center in Honolulu, where he died 6:19 p.m. Sunday, police said.

The Toyota driver was not injured, police said.

It is unknown at this time if alcohol or drugs were involved, but speed was a factor in this case, police said.

Traffic Enforcement Unit officers have initiated a negligent homicide investigation and have ordered an autopsy to determine the exact cause of death.

This is the 19th traffic fatality on the Big Island this year compared with 12 at this time last year.
