The Hawaii County Department of Parks and Recreation in Captain Cook is conducting a beginning yoga program from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. Thursdays at Yano Hall. Qatsina Marigold is the instructor.

Onizuka center celebrates 21 years
The Astronaut Ellison S. Onizuka Space Center announces a special event to celebrate its 21st anniversary on July 21-22 from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Saturday and Sunday. From 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., Tomonori and Kumiko Usuda will present astronomy activities titled, “Rainbows Everywhere.”
To thank the Kona community for its continued support, admission will be free during the anniversary weekend with hourly door prizes, special activities and “cosmic treats” for children.

Recycle Hawaii
sets annual meeting
Recycle Hawaii will hold its 20th annual general membership meeting at 10:30 a.m. Saturday in the Liquor Commission conference room at the West Hawaii Civic Center, 75-5044 Ane Keohokalole Highway, Kailua Kona. Members will be voting to fill several board of director positions to serve for either a one- or two-year term. A board of directors meeting will follow a potluck lunch after the general membership meeting. The public is invited to attend.
National Park Ranger Ida Hanohano will give a presentation on the Ala Kahakai National Historic Trail, stressing the importance of a strong connection between the land and people with the cooperation of many hands — the model of self-sufficiency that existed in Hawaii before western contact.
Recycle Hawaii is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit educational organization serving Hawaii for more than 20 years with a mission to promote resource awareness and recycling enterprises in Hawaii.

Women’s group plans high tea for Saturday
Women of the Big Island have the opportunity to enjoy the centuries-old British tradition of high tea during the Kona Women’s Connection “High Tea & Heavenly Places” quarterly gathering. It is scheduled for 2 to 4 p.m. Saturday at the home of Wanee McCabe in upper Kona.
In addition, Jen McGeehan, marketing consultant to fine jewelers nationwide, presents “A Diamond In The Rough,” and shares her 30-year fine jewelry knowledge with “From Faux To Fabulous … Gemstone Tips, Trivia and Travels.” McGeehan recently moved from Southern California to the Hamakua Coast with her husband, Pat, her 29-year old Palomino Appaloosa and a Nubian goat.

Orchid club schedules annual show and sale
The 30th annual Kona Daifukuji Orchid Club show and sale is from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. Sunday at the Daifukuji Soto Mission Hall. The Daifukuji taiko drummers will perform at 10 a.m. Attendees receive a complimentary orchid boutonniere corsage — while they last.
The anniversary theme of this year’s show is “Kona’s Orchids Through Time,” and includes a display in tribute to the late Tom Kadooka, club adviser, nurseryman and developer of the Big Isle’s vanilla industry.
Also on tap will be a display of blooming cattleya, cymbidium, dendrobium, phalaenopsis, miltonia, vanda and more by club members. In addition to other displays, the annual event offers an outdoor sale of high-quality orchid species and hybrids.
The Kona Daifukuji Orchid Club is West Hawaii’s oldest orchidaceae organization with a mission to learn and foster orchid culture and promote fellowship among orchid collectors. The club meets the second Wednesday of every month at the Daifukuji Soto Mission Hall on Highway 11 at mile marker 114, just north of Kainaliu.
