Firefighters Thursday continued to douse hotspots remaining from a brush fire that broke out July 4 off Hina Lani Street in Kailua-Kona.
The fire, which jumped its perimeter Wednesday and scorched additional acreage bringing the total burn area to 430 acres, is under control, Hawaii Fire Department Acting Battalion Chief Charles Spain said Thursday afternoon. A bulldozer has re-cut the perimeter.
Most of the flareups continuing to prompt firefighters to respond to the area are occurring within the fire’s perimeter, he said.
The fire burned an area stretching north from Hina Lani to Hulikoa Road after igniting about 3:30 p.m. July 4 in vacant land north of Hina Lani’s intersection with Kamanu Street, according to the Hawaii Fire Department. The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
