The mission of Hawaii Island United Way is to unite people, organizations and resources to build a healthier community. In partnership, and in keeping with its commitment to the well-being and healthy development of Big Island keiki, KAPA Hawaiian FM and United Way have teamed up and ask the community to join them in their initiative to Kakoo I Na Keiki, or Support the Keiki.
The public can participate by dropping off school supplies from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday at Kmart or Walmart in Kailua-Kona. Other dates and sites include noon to 4 p.m. July 28 at the Kona Commons McDonald’s and 5 to 7 p.m. July 28 during the Hui Kakoo Concert at Keauhou Shopping Center.
Monetary donations will be received by visiting hiuw.org or clicking on the HIUW logo on the radio station’s website, kaparadio.com/supportthekeiki.
Waimea library boosters to meet
The public is invited to attend the Friends of Thelma Parker Memorial Library’s annual meeting from 5 to 7 p.m. Wednesdsay in the library’s meeting room.

The agenda consists of a short business meeting and election of officers — nominations will be accepted from the floor. The organization will supply entrees and beverages. Bring a dessert or pupu.

Candidate talk story is Saturday
Waimea Town Market and Parker School are hosting a candidate talk story from 8:30 a.m. to noon Saturday at the school. The event provides an opportunity to meet and speak to the individuals who want to represent and serve North Hawaii residents. With no speeches and no pressure, voters will have the uncommon opportunity to spend time chatting with each candidate, one-on-one.
Candidates for all local and islandwide offices have been invited. Those confirmed as of press time include U.S. House of Representatives candidate Bob Marx; Hawaii County mayoral candidates Harry Kim and Dominic Yagong; District 4 state Senate candidates Lorraine Inouye and Malama Solomon; District 9 County Council candidates Bill Sanborn and Margaret Wille; and Hawaii County Prosecutor candidates Lincoln Ashida and Mitch Roth.
Visitors should note that the candidates have been asked to meet with voters only in their tents.
Casual attire is suggested for Waimea Town Market, and layers are recommended since Waimea temperatures can vary widely and mist or rain is always possible. For more information, call Paul Johnston, 938-4540.
