One person is dead and Queen Kaahumanu Highway remains closed late Thursday while police and fire rescue personnel continue to assess a crash near Kiholo Bay.
A Hawaii Fire Department official confirmed the fatality noting that police were still investigating the crash near mile marker 82, near Kiholo Bay. An age and gender were not available.
The crash, which the official said involved at least two cars, was reported about 4:30 p.m. The highway was closed shortly thereafter.
Police are detouring traffic around the area via Waikoloa Road and Highway 190. The closure is expected to last until about 8:30 p.m.
