Woodward’s poems nominated for prize
Waimea resident Greer Woodward has been nominated for the Rhysling Award, the annual prize given by the Science Fiction Poetry Association to honor the best science fiction, fantasy or horror poems from the previous year.
Woodward’s poem “Closure,” published in the October 2011 edition of Illumen magazine, was nominated in the Rhysling’s short poem category. “Ribbons of the Sun,” published in the December 2011 issue of the online magazine Silver Blade, was nominated in the long category.
Nominated poems appear in The Rhysling Anthology, distributed to the membership as a voting tool. The anthology also is sold by the SFPA to raise funds for association programs.
Winning works are reprinted in the Nebula Awards Anthology from the Science Fiction and Fantasy Writers of America. Past winners have included such science fiction and fantasy notables as Ursula K. Le Guin, Bruce Boston, Joe Haldeman and Jane Yolen.
Woodward is co-host of the Writers Support Group at Tutu’s House. Her science fiction and fantasy short stories and poems are in “Twisted Cat Tales,” “Strange Stories of Sand and Sea,” “Beyond Centauri,” “Shelter of Daylight,” “Aoife’s Kiss” and “Star*Line.”

Concert benefits horsemanship program
Therapeutic Horsemanship of Hawaii’s Kona program is holding a benefit concert “Spain to Hawaii through Music and Dance” from 4 to 7 p.m. July 22. Held in a private residence in Makalei Estates, this performance will feature Alex Walter playing classical Spanish piano selections and performing Flamenco dances and John Keawe, award-winning slack key guitarist, with his wife, Hope, dancing hula.
Pupu and wine will be included in the ticket price of $35 in advance or $45 at the door. There will be silent auction items, including hotel stays, helicopter tours, golf rounds, garden features, haircuts and beauty treatments and a variety of artwork and handcrafted items.
