Rural homeschooling project announced
Rural families with school-age children who would prefer to educate their kids in a supportive home and community environment are invited to learn about a new alliance forming to meet those home-based learning needs. One Island is building a rural school alliance with other education partners to create a flexible program that combines a hybrid of home learning and small-group community center learning.
A meeting will be held from 1 to 5 p.m. Sunday at One Island Sustainable Living Center on Painted Church Road in Honaunau. The public is invited to attend and learn about collaborative multisubject K-12 education options that include: online state-approved curriculum and teachers through the Myron B. Thompson Academy Charter School; weekly hands-on experiential science, art and technology learning at One Island’s Sustainable Living Center; monthly family field trips and learn-by-doing workshops; and connections with local homeschool programs and area nonprofit and green business resources.
Preschool and homeschool networking with a tour of One Island will be from 1 to 2:30 p.m., and is followed by the Myron B. Thompson/One Island joint K-12 presentation from 3 to 5 p.m.

Holualoa registering children for kindergarten
Children who will be attending kindergarten at Holualoa School during the 2012-13 school year need to be registered as quickly as possible so the school may smooth the transition and be sure it has adequate staffing.
To register a child, parents or guardians will need verification of address (property tax bill, utility bill, rental agreement, etc., in the name of the parent or guardian), original birth certificate, Form 14 (health record) and a TB clearance.
Kindergarten assessments start the week of July 30.
Konawaena Elementary invites parents, students to school
Konawaena Elementary School is having its Stop and Drop Event for first- through fifth-graders July 25.
Parents and students are invited to come by anytime between 4 and 6 p.m. to meet new teachers, drop off school supplies, sign up for activities and pay for lunch and bus services.

BIRMA scholarship
This year’s winner of the Big Island Retired Military Association’s $1,000 BIRMA-Mark Allen Traxler Memorial Scholarship award is Chelsie Kualii, a graduate from Kamehameha Schools Hawaii Campus. She will enter the University of Hawaii at Manoa this summer.
This award is made annually to a Hawaii County high school senior who is a child of an active duty, reserve, National Guard or retired military member of the U.S. armed forces; or whose parent is an honorably discharged military veteran who has been awarded a service-connected disability rating; or has completed at least two years in a Junior Reserve Officers Training Corps or Civil Air Patrol program at the time of application or is a current member of the guard or reserve.
