Brantley Center golf tourney Sunday
Brantley Center Inc. will host its 34th annual golf tournament at 7 a.m. Sunday at the Waikoloa Village Golf Course.
The tournament features a two-person, best ball format, and the registration fee of $125 per person includes green fees and lunch.

Kai Opua honored by chamber of commerce
Kai Opua Canoe Club earned an award for its commitment to hosting the Queen Liliuokalanai long distance canoe race.
The Kona Kohala Chamber of Commerce presented its Visitor Industry Marketing Award to Kai Opua at the chamber’s annual membership meeting and luncheon on June 29. The race attracts visitors from many parts to the Kona and Kohala areas.
Kai Opua Canoe Club received the award “for its successful marketing efforts in attracting national and international visitors while providing a viable connection to Hawaii’s storied history and culture,” the chamber said in a press release.
The 41st annual Queen Liliuokalani begin Sept. 1 and continues through Sept. 3. The Labor Day Weekend races draw more than 2,500 competitors from around the world to race the 18-mile open ocean course.

The Hawaii Police Department’s traffic services section and the Hawaii Island Police Activities League will conduct Click It or Ticket 3-on-3 Basketball Tournaments on the following dates:
c July 20-22: Papaaloa Gymnasium in Laupahoehoe
c July 29-Aug. 1: Kekuaokalani Gymnasium
c Aug. 10-12: The new covered sports building in Panaewa
c Aug. 24-26: Honokaa Parks and Recreation sports complex
c Sept. 8: Naalehu gymnasium (tentative)
The tournaments offer five boys age divisions (5-6, 7-8, 9-10, 11-12, 13-14), a high school boys division, three girls age divisions (10-and-under, 12-and-under, 14-and-under) and a high school girls division. The tournament’s age cutoff date is Dec. 31, 2011.
Each division has a limit of 10 teams. Teams interested in participating must complete registration materials two weeks prior to the start of a tournament.
Submit registration packets at the community policing office (formerly the receiving desk in the public safety building) in Hilo or the Kona police receiving desk.
Interested teams may also fax materials to 961-2209 in East Hawaii or 327-3583 in West Hawaii.

Soccer training program
Aug. 3-4 in Kailua-Kona
The Zig Kory Soccer Academy will conduct a soccer training camp Aug. 3-4 at Old Kona Airport Park in Kailua-Kona.
Ziggy Korytoski, the University of Hawaii at Hilo’s men’s soccer coach, will oversee the camp.
One session for players ages 8-18 will run from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. Aug. 3, with two more sessions scheduled for 8:30 to 11:30 a.m. and 1 to 3 p.m. The cost is $80 before July 22 and $95 thereafter.

PCA Summer ‘Fun Raiser’
Aug. 18 at Big Island CC
Big Island Country Club will host the Puu Anahulu Community Association 10th annual “Fun Raiser” golf tournament on Aug. 18. The event is sponsored by the PCA and raises funds to support association community projects.
The event is a four-person team, modified scramble using the latest July handicap. Check-in is at 7 a.m. with a shotgun start at 8 a.m. The entry fee is $100 per person, which includes green fee, cart, prizes and awards luncheon at the Puu Anahulu Community Center immediately following the tournament.
Registration forms are available at the Big Island Country Club, located on State Highway 190 at mile marker 20, or on the Big Island Country Club website, bigislandcountryclub.com. Terry Moore, who is a regular columnist, travel writer and was the founding editor of Michigan Golfer, will be a guest on this week’s Emily T. Gail Show, which is available at espnhawaii.com under “lineup” and as an iTunes podcast.
Moore covered 29 Masters tournaments and seven Ryder Cups.
Moore will discuss how being a recreational golfer led him to create the Michigan Golfer Magazine and all that has come with his success, including becoming a Michigan Golf Hall of Fame member. He’ll give some updates on the U.S. Senior Open taking place at Indianwood Country Club near Detroit.
Also, Gail will have updates on the Bike Works MS Charity Team Ride for all levels of riders, the Team Mango events on Wednesday evenings, and Bert Roussel’s 27th Mardi Gras golf tournament to fight cancer. The tournament is sold out, but people can still make donations. She will also have info on the golf specials at Mauna Kea Resort and Waikoloa Beach Resort.
