The National Federation of the Blind meets at 10 a.m. Monday at Hale Halawai on Alii Drive in Kailua-Kona. Membership is not required, nor is any degree of blindness. Anyone interested is welcome.

Donations sought
for deployed troops
Supplies are being gathering to help troops deal with the conditions they may be experiencing overseas. Recommended items include: lip balm; chewing gum, hard candy, mints and other candies; body lotion, shampoo, eye drops, sun block, multivitamins instant drink mix, underwear, socks, shoelaces for boots, Lysol wipes, snack mix except chocolate, deodorant, body and foot powders, packets of baby wipes, sealable freezer bags, AA and AAA batteries, playing cards, puzzles, books, games, CDs and DVDs.
Donors may bring items before July 31 to A Hui Hou Crematory and Funeral Home, 74-5615 Luhia St., Kailua-Kona. For more information, call 329-5137.
Hospital auxiliary meets Monday
The Kona Community Hospital Auxiliary board meets at 1 p.m. Monday in the hospital’s lower level conference room. Plans are being finalized for the Aug. 12 general membership meeting; suggestions are welcome.
Everyone is invited to stop by the bake sale from 7 to 9 a.m. Fridays in the hospital cafeteria.

Book Club meets Tuesday in Keauhou
Second Tuesday Book Club meets to discuss fiction titles from 6:30 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at Kona Stories. The group will discuss “West of Here” by Johathan Evison.
Set in the fictional town of Port Bonita, on Washington state’s rugged Pacific coast, “West of Here” is propelled by a story that both re-creates and celebrates the American experience. With one segment of the narrative focused on the town’s founders circa 1890, and another showing the lives of their descendants in 2006, the novel develops as a kind of conversation between two epochs, one rushing blindly toward the future and the other struggling to undo the damage of the past.
Attendees are asked to read the book in advance of the meeting and come prepared for a discussion. The group is free, and everyone is invited and asked to bring a favorite pupu or beverage to share.

Ishii completes
basic military training
Air Force Airman Jacob A. Ishii has graduated from basic military training at Lackland Air Force Base, San Antonio.
The airman completed an intensive, eight-week program that included training in military discipline and studies, Air Force core values, physical fitness, and basic warfare principles and skills.
Airmen who complete basic training earn four credits toward an associate in applied science degree through the Community College of the Air Force.
Ishii is the son of Cathyann Ishii of Hilo.
He is a 2010 graduate of Hilo High School.
Problem solving program planned
Facilitators, community builders, planners and others working with diverse groups and communities to problem-solve and plan are invited to “Aelike: A Process Allowing for Individual Voice, Visibility and Validation in Groups” with guest speaker Lenore Kuumeaaloha Gomes, director of the University of Hawaii Kuaana Student Services.
Aelike draws upon concepts of family hooponopono, consensus decision making and peaceful strategies for problem resolution allowing people to participate in group processes from a place of power. There will be time for questions and answers, discussion and sharing.
The event will be held from 3 to 5 p.m. Wednesday at the Bakken Family office conference room, Hale Kui Plaza No. 207, 73-5619 Kauhola St., Kailua-Kona. The site is in the Kaloko Light Industrial Area. It’s free, and refreshments are provided.
