A 43-year-old Puna man was sentenced Thursday to serve a decade in prison after being caught on video breaking into a Puna home.
Jesse Akina pleaded guilty to three counts first-degree burglary and was sentenced by 3rd Circuit Court Judge Glenn S. Hara to concurrent 10-year prison terms, according to the Hawaii County Office of the Prosecuting Attorney. In handing down the sentence, Hara rejected a request by Akina to serve probation.
A Hawaii Police Department investigation found on March 12, 2011, Akina was captured by the surveillance system breaking into a residence within the Hawaiian Paradise Park subdivision. The video also helped tie Akina to other burglaries on June 27, 2010, and July 18, 2010, according to the office.
First-degree burglary is a class B felony punishable by up to 10 years in prison and a maximum fine of $25,000, according to the office.
