The Fountain Gallery at Wailoa Arts and Cultural Center presents 77 breeds of dogs in one small space. The exhibit is the work of Hawaii artist William Gilliam.
The Canine Portrait Project began in January 2011 with $5,000 he raised through Kickstarter. His goal is to paint 150 dogs, about the same number recognized by the American Kennel Club, with a few mutts, too, in eight months and publish a book of the portraits through Lulu. A percentage of the portrait and book sales will go to the Hawaii Island Humane Society. The original portraits will be on display beginning today through July 26, with an opening reception for the artist from 5 to 7 p.m. today.
The center in Hilo is free and open to the public from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday; noon to 4:30 p.m. Wednesday; and closed on Saturdays, Sundays and state holidays.
