A relatively slow moving brush fire scorched more than 90 acres north of Hina Lani Street Wednesday in Kailua-Kona.
The fire, which broke out about 4 p.m. in vacant land north of the road’s intersection with Kamanu Street, continues to spread, fanned by makai winds, said Hawaii Fire Department Assistant Chief Aaron Arbles. It was listed at 90 acres as of 9 p.m.
An evacuation ordered for residents of the Kaloko Transitional Housing, located mauka of the Kaloko Light Industrial Area, was cancelled about 8 p.m., he said. The fire was not threatening any structures, Arbles said.
As of 9 p.m., the department was working to establish a perimeter around the fire’s mauka boundary but was having difficulty because one of the bulldozers was apparently stuck in a lava tube, Arbles said.
Hina Lani Street, between Kanalani Street and Ane Keohokalole Highway, remained closed except to local traffic, he said.
