Firefighters Thursday continue to douse hotspots remaining from a brush fire that broke out Wednesday afternoon north of Hina Lani Street in Kailua-Kona.
The fire was estimated at 400 acres around 11 a.m. Thursday, said Hawaii Fire Department West Hawaii Battalion Chief Ty Medeiros. It is listed as contained and under control.
According to the department, the blaze broke out about 4 p.m. in vacant land north of the road’s intersection with Kamanu Street. An evacuation ordered for residents of the Kaloko Transitional Housing, located mauka of the Kaloko Light Industrial Area, was canceled about 8 p.m. Wednesday.
Medeiros said the cause of the fire remains under investigation. He noted the department suspects fireworks may have been involved, but no evidence supporting that suspicion has been found.
