Coffee conference scheduled on Maui
The Hawaii Coffee Association celebrates Hawaiian coffee and offers educational, awareness and networking events at its 17th annual conference and fourth annual cupping competition July 19 to 21 at the Maui Tropical Plantation in Waikapu, Maui.
This year’s cupping features more than 117 entries vying for the Grand Champion of Hawaiian Coffee title in commercial and creative categories. Top coffees from each growing origin will also be recognized.
Entries will be available for blind tasting and comments will be tendered from attendees.
The conference features a series of hands-on roasting, cupping and grower workshops; farm tours; updates on the organization’s legislative initiatives; growers reports from across the state and industry news from researchers and regulators. The University of Hawaii, state Department of Agriculture and the USDA will host a free workshop focusing on preventing and controlling the coffee berry borer. Howard Dicus will serve as keynote speaker.

Resort wins award
Sheraton Keauhou Bay Resort & Spa has received a Kona Kohala Chamber of Commerce Pualu Award for Culture and Heritage. The award recognized the resort for exhibiting, through its actions, practices that promote island traditions and preserve Hawaii’s multicultural heritage.
