Team Soccer
Direct camp today through Thursday
Team Soccer Direct will conduct soccer camps for children ages 6 to 18 today through Thursday at Old Kona Airport Park.
The soccer organization’s half-day camp for players in 6-and-under through 14-and-under age groups will take place from 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. The cost is $75. A high school camp running from 1 to 3 p.m. costs $75.

The Hapuna Roughwater Swim will take place at 8 a.m. Saturday at Hapuna Beach State Park.

King’s Swim
July 7 at Kailua Bay
Kona Aquatics will host its 18th annual King’s Swim at 8 a.m. July 7 at Kailua Bay.
The 1.2-mile course begins at Kailua Bay and ends at Kamakahonu Bay, directly in front of King Kamehameha’s Kona Beach Hotel.
Event organizers will not allow fins or wetsuits. Applications are available at Bike Works (74-5583 Luhia St.) in Kailua-Kona.
A nonrefundable entry fee of $15 must accompany the application.
The registration deadline is Saturday.
Late registration takes place from 6:30 to 7:30 a.m. at Kailua Pier on race day. The late registration fee is $20.
Awards go to the top three male and female finishers and to winners in each of the event’s 14 age groups. Volunteers with kayaks or surfboards wishing to join the safety patrol for the swim are welcome to participate.

sports tryouts soon
Kealakehe High School’s fall sports tryouts will begin in late July.
Students wanting to participate in fall sports must complete physical examination and athletic consent forms before doing so. The forms are available in the school’s attendance office.

The Hawaii Police Department’s traffic services section and the Hawaii Island Police Activities League will conduct Click It or Ticket 3-on-3 Basketball Tournaments on the following dates:
c July 14: Kamehameha Park gymnasium in Kohala
c July 20-22: Papaaloa Gymnasium in Laupahoehoe
c July 29-Aug. 1: Kekuaokalani Gymnasium
c Aug. 10-12: The new covered sports building in Panaewa
c Aug. 24-26: Honokaa Parks and Recreation sports complex
c Sept. 8: Naalehu gymnasium (tentative)
The tournaments offer five boys age divisions (5-6, 7-8, 9-10, 11-12, 13-14), a high school boys division, three girls age divisions (10-and-under, 12-and-under, 14-and-under) and a high school girls division. The tournament’s age cutoff date is Dec. 31, 2011.
Each division has a limit of 10 teams. Teams interested in participating must complete registration materials two weeks prior to the start of a tournament.
Submit registration packets at the community policing office (formerly the receiving desk in the public safety building) in Hilo or the Kona police receiving desk.
Interested teams may also fax materials to 961-2209 in East Hawaii or 327-3583 in West Hawaii.

HMSA recognizes
3 from Big Island
Two Konawaena students and one from Kamehameha-Hawaii received Hawaii Medical Service Association awards on June 16.
Konawaena’s Camille Rickets and Trevor Yamagata, along with Kamehameha-Hawaii’s Erin Carvalho, received HMSA Kaimana scholarships worth $3,000 each. Carvalho was also named a distinguished scholarship recipient, and she received an additional $2,000.
A total of 22 student athletes from across the islands were awarded scholarships.
Also, Waiakea, Kealakehe and Hilo in Division I and Hualalai, Kohala and Hawaii Prep in Division II were recognized for their accomplishments in athletics, academics, sportsmanship and community service, according to the press release.
HPA’s Brostek receives Gatorade honor
Hawaii Prep’s Shane Brostek was named the Gatorade Hawaii boys track and field Athlete of the Year.
The award recognizes athletic success, academic achievement and overall character. Brostek is now a finalist for the national award.
The 6-foot-3, 283-pound senior captured the Hawaii High School Athletic Association state championship in the shot put this spring with a throw of 55 feet, 7.25 inches at the state meet.
The Most Outstanding Athlete at the Punahou Relays this past season, Brostek also placed fourth in the discus at the state championships, launching it 159 feet, 9 inches.
His shot put toss of 56 feet and discus throw of 168 feet, 11 inches at the Honolulu Marathon Invitational ranked as the Northwest’s No. 16 and No. 21 performances, respectively, among prep competitors in 2012 at the time of his selection.
Also a football standout, Brostek has maintained a 3.71 GPA in the classroom. He has donated his time as a youth football and track instructor.
Brostek has signed a National Letter of Intent to compete on a football scholarship at the University of Washington this fall.
