Police arrested 30 drivers for suspected drunken driving between June 4 and Sunday; eight were involved in traffic accidents and four were younger than 21.

Police arrested 30 drivers for suspected drunken driving between June 4 and Sunday; eight were involved in traffic accidents and four were younger than 21.

Police have made 678 suspected DUI arrests this year compared with 703 during the same period in 2011, according to the Hawaii Police Department.

South Hilo officers arrested 11 motorists while Kona officers arrested nine and Puna officers seven, according to police. South Kohala officers arrested two drivers while Hamakua officers arrested one.

There have been 699 major accidents this year compared with 661 during the same period last year.

To date, there have been 14 traffic fatalities on Big Island public roadways, compared with 11 fatalities during the same period in 2011, according to police. To date, six of those fatalities were related to drugs, three to alcohol and two to a combination of alcohol and drugs.
