Duckie adoptions benefit charities

The 21st annual Rubber Duckie Race, benefiting the United Cerebral Palsy Association of Hawaii and the Food Basket, is set for July 4 at the Kings’ Shops in the Waikoloa Beach Resort.

Ducks will be tagged with a waterproof ticket and adoption number with the name of the adoptee. They will then be placed in a giant starting cage suspended over the Kings’ Lake. At 3 p.m., they will be released. The first 50 duckies to cross the finish line will win more than $24,000 in prizes.

Adoption certificates are available at Adoption Headquarters, the Kings’ Shops Management Office and at the Queens’ MarketPlace Management Office. Mail-in order forms are available at Hawaii Community Federal Credit Union locations and the Waikoloa Village Market. Online purchases can be made at kingsshops.com. Ducks will be available for adoption on race day at the United Cerebral Palsy Association booth. Adopt a duck with a donation of $5, or purchase a “quack pack” of four adoption certificates and an event T-shirt for $25.

The first 500 people at the Independence Day event, which runs from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m., will receive gifts, promotions and discounts from Kings’ Shops merchants and a commemorative rubber duck. In addition to the race, other activities are planned, including live entertainment and watermelon eating, duck waddling and duck calling contests.

Video production class scheduled for July 5

A free video production class is planned from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. July 5 at Na Leo O Hawaii’s facilities located in Kaiwi Square off Luhia Street in Kailua-Kona.

Na Leo O Hawaii is the nonprofit established to manage the county’s public, education and government cable access channels and to promote the creation of programs by and for the people of Hawaii Island.
