Parks and Rec offers photography classes
Professional photographer Robert Weygand Sr. will lead photography classes sponsored by the Hawaii County Department of Parks and Recreation.
Morning and evening sessions of his “Beginner, Intermediate and Advanced Photography Classes” begin July 2. Film or digital SLR cameras are required to take this class. A special darkroom class is planned for die-hard film fans.
Registration runs through Thursday. Class size is limited; early registration is recommended.

Underwater photogs meet Wednesday
The Kona Underwater Photographic Society meets at 7 p.m. Wednesday at the Imin Center in Holualoa. The parking lot and doors open at 6:30 for set-up.
“Big Critters” is the mini-comp subject; members will share their best recent work. Images must be in digital format on a memory stick, DVD or CD; sharing is limited to three minutes per person. The public is invited to attend.

Trails connect past, present at lecture
Richard Stevens’ “Voices From the Edge: Hawaii’s Ancient Trails and Their Message Today” is a Hanohano O Kona Lecture Series presentation, planned from 5:30 to 7 p.m. Wednesday at the West Hawaii Civic Center.
Stevens is an expert on Hawaiian trails and has worked extensively as a “trail hunter” and researcher for the state Division of Forestry and Wildlife and the Research Corporation of the University of Hawaii.
Presented by the Kona Historical Society, in cooperation with Hawaii County, the lecture series is a gift from the society to the community that has supported it for so long.
Residents and visitors are invited to attend this free event.
Soroptimists to
install new board
Soroptimist International of Kona’s monthly meeting is slated at 11:30 a.m. Thursday in the Discovery Room at the Royal Kona Resort. The club will install its board and induct new members at this meeting. Guests and prospective members are welcome.

Annual cultural
festival planned at Puuhonua o Honaunau
Puuhonua o Honaunau National Historical Park will present its annual Hawaiian cultural festival and 51st anniversary as a unit of the National Park Service.
The event begins with a hula performance by Kamakani Hali Ala O Puna, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Friday.
Activities, including hula, canoe rides and lei making, are planned from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. June 30. The celebration continues with the addition of food tasting, and a hukilau demonstration from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. July 1.
Practitioners in traditional dress will provide visitors with a Hawaiian experience, honoring the culture and traditions of the Hawaiian people. The festival will provide the community a time and place to gather, learn and share.
Park fees are waived for this event. Visitors are advised that picnicking, chairs and coolers are not allowed in the Royal Grounds, and there are no food vendors in the park.
