The Kohala Community, The Trust for Public Land, Maikai Kamakani O Kohala Inc., Malama Kai Foundation’s Ocean Warriors Program and the state Department of Land and Natural Resources will host a hoolaulea and land dedication at Kauhola Point from noon to 2 p.m. Saturday.

The event will include a blessing, lunch, Hawaiian music, speeches and the opportunity for people to share knowledge about Kauhola, also known as “Lighthouse.”
Maikai Kamakani O Kohala now owns the 27.5-acre Kauhola Point property to the east of the road to the lighthouse. Maikai officials plan to ensure “access is maintained for recreational and cultural practices, and that the land will remain undeveloped open space for Kohala to enjoy in perpetuity,” according to an announcement about Saturday’s event, which is open to the public.
A walking tour will be offered at 2 p.m. To reach the ceremony, take Halaula Road off Akoni Pule Highway and follow the signs. Halaula Road is two miles east of the Kamehameha Statue in Kapaau. Officials recommend carpooling.
The program begins at noon with an opening protocol and land blessing. Hawaiian food will be served at 12:15 p.m., and speakers, including DLNR Chairman William Aila, area legislators, funders and community partners, will address the crowd beginning at that time. Food and music will be available from 1 to 2 p.m., followed by a 30-minute walking tour.
Kauhola Point is The Trust for Public Land’s 25th completed project in Hawaii.
