GREAT FALLS, Mont. — Former NFL quarterback Ryan Leaf could spend 15 months locked down in Montana, first in a secure drug treatment facility and then in a pre-release living center as part of a judge’s sentence following Leaf’s guilty plea for breaking into a house and illegally possessing painkillers.
District Judge Kenneth Neill sentenced Leaf on Tuesday to seven years with the Department of Corrections, with two years suspended if he abides by the conditions. Neill recommended that Leaf’s sentence start with nine months at the Nexus Treatment Center in Lewistown, where he would be unable to leave, followed by time in a pre-release center.
Leaf’s attorney said he expects the 36-year-old Leaf to spend six months in the pre-release center if he successfully completes the treatment. At that point, he could be eligible for monitored release.
Leaf was taken No. 2 overall by the San Diego Chargers in the 1998 NFL draft after a standout career at Washington State, but his rocky and short-lived professional career earned him the reputation as one of the biggest busts in NFL history.
Wade faces custody issue during finals
MIAMI— Dwyane Wade has asked a Chicago judge to suspend his ex-wife’s right to visitation with their two children after a weekend incident that delayed the boys’ return to his custody and led to her arrest.
Wade’s attorney, James Pritikin, filed an emergency motion and appeared in court Tuesday to have it heard, hours before the Miami Heat guard was to play in Game 4 of the NBA finals against the Oklahoma City Thunder.
A hearing was set for June 26, which would be the date of Game 7 if the Heat and Thunder extend the series to its limit.
Wade told The Associated Press that his sons have been with him in Miami since about 6 a.m. Sunday — “That’s what mattered most to me, getting them here to be with me on Father’s Day,” he said — and that the incident has not adversely affected his play in the championship series.
Siohvaughn Funches-Wade was charged with two counts of attempted child abduction, two counts of unlawful visitation interference and one count of resisting arrest, Cook County Sheriff’s spokesman Frank Bilecki told The AP on Tuesday. Another woman at the home at the time, Nadgee Alarcon, was charged with one count of resisting arrest, Bilecki said. All the charges are misdemeanors.
Phelps vs. Lochte six times at US swim trials
OMAHA, Neb. — Michael Phelps and Ryan Lochte renew their rivalry at next week’s U.S. Olympic trials, where both swimmers are entered in seven events, including six against each other.
They’ll open the eight-day meet in Omaha, Neb., on Monday in the 400-meter individual medley, a grueling event Phelps had said he wasn’t going to swim anymore after the 2008 Olympics, where he won a record eight gold medals. He holds the world record in the event.
Their other events against each other will be the 100 and 200 freestyle, 200 backstroke, 200 IM and 100 butterfly. Phelps is entered in the 200 butterfly; Lochte is set to swim the 100 back.
Phelps’ other world records are in the 100 and 200 butterfly. He holds the American record in the 200 free.
Lochte’s lone world record is in the 200 IM from last year’s world championships, the first world mark set since high-tech bodysuits were banned.
Notre Dame announces 10-year deal with Brey
SOUTH BEND, Ind. —Notre Dame has officially announced a new 10-year contract with men’s basketball coach Mike Brey.
The school said Tuesday the deal will run through June 2022. Financial terms were not disclosed.
Brey has led the Irish to six straight 20-win seasons. He has been named the Big East Coach of the Year three times and is 133-89 in league play.
Lakers’ Sessions won’t exercise player option
EL SEGUNDO, Calif. — Los Angeles Lakers guard Ramon Sessions is declining his player option for next season to test free agency.
Lakers general manager Mitch Kupchak said Tuesday he wishes Sessions had picked up the $4.55 million option for next year, but the club will still make an effort to sign the point guard.
Sessions took over as the Lakers’ starting point guard shortly after they acquired him from Cleveland near the trade deadline. Los Angeles also traded longtime starter Derek Fisher in a separate deal.
Sessions averaged 12.7 points, 6.2 assists and 3.8 rebounds in 23 regular-season games, revitalizing the Lakers with his speed and playmaking. But he largely struggled in the postseason, averaging 6.8 points and 3.0 assists in the first playoff experience of his five-year NBA career.
Red Sox activate Ross, put Podsednik on DL
BOSTON — The Boston Red Sox have activated Cody Ross and placed Scott Podsednik on the 15-day disabled list with a strained left groin.
Ross started Tuesday night’s game against the Miami Marlins in left field. Ryan Kalish started in center field, Podsednik’s usual position.
Ross was hitting .271 with eight homers and 28 RBIs in 37 games when he went on the disabled list on May 22 with a fractured bone in his left foot. He signed with Boston in January after spending the past two seasons with San Francisco.
Podsednik, hurt Sunday night against the Chicago Cubs, hit .387 with one homer and 7 RBIs in 19 games after being called up by the Red Sox on May 22. They obtained him from Philadelphia on May 11.
Braves’ Beachy has partial tear in elbow
NEW YORK — Atlanta Braves pitcher Brandon Beachy is set to visit orthopedist Dr. James Andrews for a second opinion on the partial tear in his right elbow.
Manager Fredi Gonzalez says team orthopedist Dr. Xavier Duralde confirmed the tear on Tuesday. Beachy will see Andrews on Wednesday.
Gonzalez says there’s no word yet on how long Beachy will be out. Beachy has been bothered by bone spurs in the past, but elbow tears often need Tommy John surgery to fix and can sideline pitchers for a year or more.
The 25-year-old Beachy was put on the 15-day disabled list Sunday, a day after leaving a start early. He is tied for the major league lead with a 2.00 ERA and is 5-5 in 13 starts.
“I’m not thinking anything,” Gonzalez said before the Braves played the Yankees.
Hellickson to go on DL with shoulder fatigue
WASHINGTON — The Tampa Bay Rays say they will place right-handed pitcher Jeremy Hellickson on the 15-day disabled list with right shoulder fatigue.
Right-hander Chris Archer will be recalled from Triple-A Durham on Wednesday, when he is scheduled to make his major league debut and start against the Washington Nationals.
Hellickson is 4-3 with a 3.45 ERA in 78 1/3 innings over 13 starts. He said X-rays of his shoulder did not reveal any damage, and he only expects to miss two starts.
Archer is 4-8 with a 4.81 ERA in 14 starts for Durham this season. Tampa Bay recalled outfielder Rich Thompson from Durham on Tuesday.
Kvitova ousted; Roddick advances at Eastbourne
EASTBOURNE, England — Wimbledon champion Petra Kvitova was among the top three women’s seeds to fall in the first round of the Eastbourne Championships on Tuesday.
However, defending champ Marion Bartoli beat Sorana Cirstea 6-2, 6-2. American Christina McHale upset third-seeded Caroline Wozniacki 6-1, 6-7 (4), 6-4.
In the men’s event, Andy Roddick claimed his first win in seven matches when fellow American Sam Querrey retired because of a back injury with Roddick leading 5-2.
Clijsters gains quarters at Unicef Open
DEN BOSCH, Netherlands — Kim Clijsters advanced to the Unicef Open quarterfinals with a 6-2, 6-1 victory over Kateryna Bondarenko of Ukraine on Tuesday.
The grass-court win a week before Wimbledon is Clijsters’ second since returning from a three-month absence because of a hip injury. She rallied past Romina Oprandi on Sunday.
