David Haili Kaawa Jr., 86, of Waiohinu, died May 23 at his residence. Born Feb. 23, 1926, in Kukuiopai, he was a retired grader operator for Ka‘u Sugar Co., a cowboy and a farmer.
Friends may call at 9 a.m. June 23 at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Naalehu for a 10 a.m. service. Burial follows at Naalehu County Cemetery. Family requests casual attire be worn. Flowers are welcome.
He is survived by sons, Dennis Kaawa, of Waiohinu, Dave (Tammy) Kaawa, of South Point, Larry (Laura) Kaawa, Eric (Kimberly) Kaawa, both of Naalehu; hanai son, Henry Kaupu, of Waianae, Oahu; daughters, Sarah (Matthew) Lazar, of Waipahu, Oahu, Doris Silva, Gail Olson, both of Hilo, Verna Kaawa, of Waiohinu, Evon Kaawa, of Naalehu, Stephanie (Karl) Mento, of Kailua-Kona; sisters, Ramona Marks, of the mainland, Evangeline (Teddy) Lacaden, of Pearl City, Oahu, Debranair Akau, of Kauai; 46 grandchildren, 73 great-grandchildren, one great-great-grandchild; numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.

Barbara Souza Komine, 80, of Kailua-Kona, died June 14 at Nakamaru Hale in Holualoa. Born April 16, 1932, in Hamakua, she was a retired bank teller for Finance Factors and member of St. Michael’s Catholic Church.

Born in Honolulu, she was a retired elementary school teacher at Keaau Elementary School and Hilo Union School, member of Church of the Holy Cross, Urasenke Tea Ceremony, Bunka No Izumi, Fukuoka Kenjin Kai and Napua University Extension Club.
