Buddhist scholar to speak in Waimea
Author and religious scholar Dr. Mark Unno will discuss “The Crooked Path of Life — Unfolding of Boundless Compassion” at 7 p.m. June 26 at the Kamuela Hongwanji on Church Row in Waimea.
Accord-ing to Unno, the core of Shin Buddhism, deals less with the monastic life, and more with the “lay path” of everyday people, much of which is unexpected and unplanned.
Unno will also speak at 6 p.m. June 25 at the Puna Hongwanji Mission in Keaau.
The events are free and open to the public.

Waimea emergency preparedness course begins June 30
The Hawaii County Civil Defense Agency and Hawaii Fire Department have scheduled an in-depth, 24-hour Community Emergency Response Team training course in Waimea.
The free classes are offered to individuals, businesses and community groups interested in learning the skills and knowledge needed to face successfully an emergency.
The four-week FEMA- and Department of Homeland Security-funded course begins June 30 in the Waimea Elementary School cafeteria. Contact Bill Hanson at the Hawaii County Civil Defense Agency at 935-0031 for more information and to register. Seating is limited; call early to reserve a seat.

Convoy moving from Hilo to PTA Tuesday
Hilo-based military units will convoy from Keaukaha Military Reserve in Hilo to Pohakuloa Training Area between 8 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. Tuesday.
The convoys will travel via Hilo Airport Road, Kanoelehua Avenue, West Puainako Street, Komohana Avenue, Puainako Extension and Saddle Road.
The convoys will have Hawaii Police Department escorts front and rear during their trip. Motorists are advised to be alert and drive with care.
The PTA Department of Army police are working closely with local authorities and military units to coordinate this activity in support of unit training.
