Donkey Mill Art Center has announced its schedule of classes and events for the week of June 25 to 30:

c June 25 to 29: Summer Art Experience 2012: Junk2Funk for kindergartners through 12th-graders is held from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. each day and costs $215.

Resident artists Yarrow Lutz and Gerald Lucena in collaboration with guest artists Andrea Linborg, Lindsay Lander and Miho Morinoue will conduct an array of projects that will both challenge and support critical and creative thinking skills for today’s youth.

Taking conceptual cues from Die Brucke, teaching artists will apply artistic inquiry to the present state of the environment and the human relationship to the natural world to expressively communicate ways to lessen the burden humans have on the planet while linking the work to a rich cultural past.

Children will explore the ripple effect of self, family, local and global communities while engaged in the artistic process. Recycled materials will replace traditional ones whenever possible, bridging the seemingly worthless into an object that holds meaning and visual merit. Also much like Die Brucke, students will “revive” traditional materials by utilizing them with a new creative approach.

c June 26: A free Create After Dark is held from 6 to 10 p.m. The Donkey Mill will be open each Tuesday so the public can use the space as an open medium studio.

c June 27: A figure drawing and anatomy class is held with Lee Ballard from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday. It is open to all levels; drop-in fee is $25. This figure drawing class will be a combination of both drawing from life and imagination, covering the basics of human anatomy as it applies to figure drawing.

The center is located at 78-6670 Mamalahoa Highway in Holualoa. For more information, call 322-3362 or visit donkeymillartcenter.org.
