A 50-year-old San Francisco man apparently drowned Wednesday while swimming in waters off the Kohala Coast.

The victim has been identified as Paul S. Tsang, according to the Hawaii Police Department.

Tsang was reportedly snorkeling about 12:35 p.m. in waters off Mauna Lani Beach Club when an unidentified person on shore noticed he was floating, according to police. An Ogden, Utah, man using a paddle board, went to check on Tsang and found him unresponsive.

Tsang was brought to shore, where a nurse from Tucson, Ariz., and Hawaii Fire Department lifeguards performed CPR until medics arrived. Tsang was taken to North Hawaii Community Hospital where he died at 1:39 p.m.

Police are investigating the matter as a coroner’s inquest and have ordered an autopsy to determine the exact cause of death.
