A 43-year-old Kailua-Kona resident is facing assault, unlawful imprisonment and threatening charges stemming from a reported Feb. 4 incident in South Kona.

Robert Kanuela Tanoai, also known as “Boomer,” turned himself in about 7:10 a.m. Tuesday at the Kona police station, according to the Hawaii Police Department. Tanoai was wanted by police on an outstanding arrest warrant for assault and other offenses.

The warrants stem from Feb. 4 when police received a report of a possible domestic incident in the Kealakekua Ranch Center’s parking lot in Kealakekua, according to police. En route, officers learned a vehicle carrying the man and woman involved in the incident had left.

While searching for the vehicle, officers responded to a report of a woman at the Honaunau Post Office who told police she had been assaulted. Further investigation revealed the assault was connected to the original call reporting the possible domestic incident. Police also determined the victim had been held against her will, threatened and assaulted, according to police.

Tanoai was charged Tuesday morning with unlawful imprisonment, terroristic threatening and two counts assault, according to police. He is being held at the Kona police cellblock on $100,000 bail pending an initial court appearance slated for today.
