Graves will be swept, followed by memorial services and exuberant cultural festivals with dancing from now through August. It’s a time to remember family and friends who have died in the previous year, but it’s not a sad season, organizers said.

The first dance occur Saturday during the annual Obon Festival at Keauhou Shopping Center. Hundreds of people attended the evening celebration that included about 85 to 90 percent traditional dances, with a few newer dance moves, including the Electric Slide, added in.
