Milolii camp focuses on species preservation

Paa Pono Milolii, in conjunction with Conservation International and the Hawaii Fish Trust, announces the 2012 Milolii Lawaia Ohana Camp from June 27 to 30 at Milolii Beach Park.

This year’s camp coordinators, Kaimi Kaupiko and Lei Kaupu, are focusing on three species — pakukui, opihi and limu — they feel are paramount to preserving Milolii’s precious resources. The three species were chosen because of a noticeable decline of these resources over the past few years. The camp’s goal is to continue the traditional ways of taking care and preserving the resources of Milolii and the South Kona coastline.

Confirmed presenters include John Kahiapo of the state Department of Land and Natural Resources’ Aquatic Resources Division, Chantal Chung of the University of Hawaii’s Sea Grant program and Erica Perez and Cindi Punihaole of The Kohala Center.

Other activities will include a biological fish monitoring project, moolelo stories of the species, hula, fish pond restoration, a hike to Honomalino Bay and a community luau. Students will create digital workbooks and presentations to display at the luau and take home to their families.

The event will commence with a traditional Hawaiian opening at 8:30 a.m. June 27 and will conclude around noon June 30.

For more information on this year’s camp, contact Kaupiko at 937-1310 or kainoa_12@hotmail.com.
