An 18-year-old Kailua-Kona man is facing robbery, assault and property damage charges stemming from a reported robbery late Tuesday in the Coconut Grove Marketplace parking lot in Kailua-Kona.
Carlos Garrido was charged Thursday afternoon with robbery, assault and criminal property damage, according to the Hawaii Police Department. His bail was set at $28,000 pending an initial court appearance scheduled for today.
A 20-year-old Kailua-Kona man, who was arrested with Garrido, was released from police custody Thursday afternoon pending further investigation, according to police. A 17-year-old boy arrested on suspicion of robbery in connection with the incident was released to his parents early Wednesday. West Hawaii Today is not identifying those two individuals because they haven’t been charged with a crime.
The charges stem from an 11:30 p.m. Tuesday report in which Kona patrol officers determined a 27-year-old Kailua-Kona man had been confronted by three men who reportedly attacked him, threw him to the ground and subsequently took his backpack, according to police. The man was able to retrieve the backpack as the men prepared to flee the scene in a blue Ford Bronco.
The 27-year-old suffered scrapes and a cut to his face, but declined medical treatment, according to police.
