Beginner golf
classes for women

Golf professional Rob Wohlgemuth will offer a five-week series of beginner golf lessons for women at Makalei Golf Club beginning Saturday.

The classes are open to all women interested in the basics of golf. Classes meet five consecutive Saturdays from 8 to 10 a.m.

The cost for all five classes is $50. To enroll, call Wohlgemuth at 937-0130.

Speed clinic at Konawaena June 12, 13

Joshua Abner, the track and field and cross-country coach at Honokaa High, and Rick Hagedorn of Speedburners will host the Big Island Speed Clinic at Konawaena High June 12 and 13.

The clinic is designed to help Big Island athletes “create speed in the athletic world,” Abner said.

The clinic is open to athletes interested in becoming faster through proper speed training.

The cost of the clinic is $100 for both days.

Progressive strength training camp
June 13-15

Performance training and injury prevention specialist Daniel Mar Chong will lead the Mar Athletic Performance Enhancement Camp for students age 14 and older June 13-15 at Hawaii Prep’s Nakamaru Fitness Center.

Students can choose from one of two camp times: 1 to 2:30 p.m. or 2:30 to 4 p.m. The camp fee is $100, and space is limited to the first 20 athletes.

The camp will cover the fundamentals of a progressive strength training technique. Mar Chong breaks away from traditional strength training and introduces new performance enhancement training techniques. At the conclusion of every workout there will be a 10-15 minute presentation on hydration, nutrition and supplements by Hawaii Prep trainer Scott Oshiro.

King’s Swim July 7
at Kailua Bay

Kona Aquatics will host its 18th annual King’s Swim at 8 a.m. July 7 at Kailua Bay.

The 1.2-mile course begins at Kailua Bay and ends at Kamakahonu Bay, directly in front of King Kamehameha’s Kona Beach Hotel.

Event organizers will not allow fins or wetsuits. Applications are available at Bike Works (74-5583 Luhia St.) in Kailua-Kona.

A nonrefundable entry fee of $15 must accompany the application.

The registration deadline is June 30.

Late registration takes place from 6:30 to 7:30 a.m. at Kailua Pier on race day. The late registration fee is $20.

Awards go to the top three male and female finishers and to winners in each of the event’s 14 age groups. Volunteers with kayaks or surfboards wishing to join the safety patrol for the swim are welcome to participate.

The Hawaii Police Department’s traffic services section and the Hawaii Island Police Activities League will conduct Click It or Ticket 3-on-3 Basketball Tournaments on the following dates:

c June 15-16: Keaau High School gym

c June 22-24: Old Pahoa High gymnasium

c July 29-Aug. 1: Kekuaokalani Gymnasium

c July 14: Kamehameha Park gymnasium in Kohala

c July 20-22: Papaaloa Gymnasium in Laupahoehoe

c Aug. 10-12: The new covered sports building in Panaewa

c Aug. 24-26: Honokaa Parks and Recreation sports complex

c Sept. 8: Naalehu gymnasium (tentative)

The tournaments offer five boys age divisions (5-6, 7-8, 9-10, 11-12, 13-14), a high school boys division, three girls age divisions (10-and-under, 12-and-under, 14-and-under) and a high school girls division. The tournament’s age cutoff date is Dec. 31, 2011.

Each division has a limit of 10 teams. Teams interested in participating must complete registration materials two weeks prior to the start of a tournament. Submit registration packets at the community policing office (formerly the receiving desk in the public safety building) in Hilo or the Kona police receiving desk. Interested teams may also fax materials to 961-2209 in East Hawaii or 327-3583 in West Hawaii.

Emily T. Gail Show

Capt. James Lee, whose boat took part in the Newport to Ensenada Yacht Race in May, is a guest for this week’s Emily T. Gail Show, which is available at espnhawaii.com under “lineup” and as an iTunes podcast. Lee will discuss the California race, including a discussion about the tragedy that occurred when three sailors died and one went missing. The former instructor at the United States Naval Academy will also talk about his experiences in Iraq.

Lee will also discuss the Memorial Day events at West Hawaii Veterans Cemetery.
